Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988.
"'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it."
"There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. this song kind of explains itself...its about a girl who has a drug problem and her boyfriend tries to help her but she can't be helped or something...i really like KO because he is canadien and has such different but amazing songs :)
I think the only things that needs to be cleared up is who he's sing to and the meaning of "L". I'm guessing he singing to a close friend and "L" is slang for a blunt.
An "L" is a two paper joint that is connected in the shape of an L before you roll it. <br /> <br /> The girl clearly would rather live numb than in reality, which is like so many of my generation these days.
An "L" can also be a term used for a crack pipe or smoking crack.
I believe "L" refers to a crackpipe in this case. Also does anyone know if these lyrics are official or posted from another member? I always thought he said--- Well now she’s just another story When we pass around that 'Foily' (which is another type of crackpipe). Great song though, really hits home.
An "L" is a big joint rolled with two papers perpendicular to each other. Uh, so I have heard from "people" that do that sort of thing...lol

@Legin11 An "L" is a blunt (named for El Producto brand, which is a cheap cigar typically used for making blunts) and licking a ring around it is to keep it burning evenly. This fits with the next line, referring to a Philly, which is another slang term that comes from the Philly Blunt brand of cigars used for this purpose as well. I don't think this song is about crack smoking.
