"The Difference Between Us" as written by and Jack White Jack Lawrence....
I'm not the way that you found me
I'm never here or there
One day I'm happy and healthy
Next I ain't doing so well

Let's go walk to the border
Let's go walk along the inch
Let's go when no one can see us
And find the difference between us

You can cry like a baby
Just let me do what I need to
It might be to me or to you
Just let me do what I need to

I'm not the way that you found me
I'm neither here nor there
One day I'm happy and healthy
Next I ain't doing so well

Let's go walk to the border
Let's go walk along the inch
Let's go when no one can see us
And find the difference between us

I'm not the way that you found me
I'm neither here nor there
One day I'm happy and healthy
Next I ain't doing so well

Let's go walk to the border
Let's go walk along the inch
Let's go when no one can see us
And find the difference between us

You can cry like a baby
Just let me do what I need to
It might be to me or to you
Just let me do what I need to

I'm not the way that you found me
I'm neither here nor there
One day I'm happy and healthy
Next I ain't doing so well

General CommentThis song is gorgeous, I love it.

    BTW, it's "edge", not "inch".

    General CommentLove this song...
It sounds like it's about a relationship with a manic depressive, or maybe the character's own relationship with the fact that she's manic depressive.. "I'm not the way that you found me." "One day I'm happy and healthy, Next I ain't doing so well." "Let's go walk along the edge", etc.

"Let's go where no one can see us and find the difference between us." seems to be a sexual reference to me, the difference being gender. But it could also be about bipolar again, finding the difference between the two people within herself.

And "You can cry like a baby, just let me do what I need to" ... I first thought of rape, but it could be about fighting with yourself internally, you know you're acting crazy, but you do it anyway if the song actually is about bipolar disorder. It really seems to be about that to me, but maybe because I have personal experience with someone with bipolar disorder, that's just how I interpret it. It could have a lot of meanings. Another being just an unhealthy and addictive relationship you can't get out of, like a lot of The Dead Weather's songs seem to be about.

General CommentI agree with CrimeKisses, but about the part were she is fighting with her depressed self. "You can cry like a baby, just let me do what i need to." she is talking to her depressed self and is saying "you can drag me down, but let me do what i need to stay sain!" she has two different sides and is trying to find the difference between them. Her happy and healthy side and her depressed side. when she says "I'm not the way that you found me." She's talking to her partner?

General CommentI agree with CrimeKisses thing about 'the difference between us' being gender. I can see the depressive side to this having read other interpretations, but I've always thought it was more of a sexual song.

I kind of get the impression that when she says 'let me do what i need to', she's in some kind of a sexual frenzy and doesn't want to talk, just wants to get to it right away.
The difference between them could possibly not just be a gender thing but the difference between their needs, or possibly twisting sex as an aggressive activity where they're 'thrashing something out'.

General CommentI think the song is rhetorical; meaning there is no "difference" between the two people in the song. When it comes down to putting the "turd on the table", people are more similar in feelings and reactions despite any variables- especially seemingly "mentally healthy" and "sane" people. We all have a capcity for self destruction or to hurt others; this was Freud's main argument, that people act on instinct, and therefore need to be controlled.
See how people lose it in an environment that is controlled too much. Look at how many suicide pacts there are, especially in Asia. How many people say on reflection that those that committ serious offenses were seemingly "happy and healthy"?

General CommentI honestly think that this song is about rape. "I;m neither here nor there" like she isn't in her body anymore. "Just let me do what I need to" is coming from the man she is with. "one day i'm happy and healthy, next i ain't doing so well" is explanatory. Sorry to be so down about the song.
