"The Wolves" as written by and Benjamin John Howard....
Falling from high places, falling through lost spaces,
Now that we're lonely, now that there's nowhere to go.
Watching from both sides, these clock towers burning up,
I lost my time here, I lost my patience with it all.

We lost faith, in the arms of love.

Where you been hiding lately,
Where you been hiding from the news?
Because we've been fighting lately,
We've been fighting with the wolves.
With the wolves.
Red tongues and hands.

Falling from high places, falling through lost spaces,
Now that we're lonely, now that there's nowhere to go.
Watching from both sides, these towers been tumbling down,
I lost my mind here, I lost my patience with the lord.

We lost faith, oh in the arms of love

Where you been hiding lately,
Where you been hiding from the news?
Because we've been fighting lately,
We've been fighting with the wolves.
With the wolves.
Red tongues and hands.

We lost faith, in the arms of love.

General CommentWhere to go when you can't go to anyone, not even God? I think he is mad at God, and maybe just coming to the realization of how cruel and violent the world is, and wondering how a God that is supposed to love us allows these atrocious things to happen in a world he created, and about losing faith in humanity as well.

General CommentThere is a very good post discussing this song here bywayofbeauty.com/2011/10/…

In essence, the song is about a man dealing with a "Hidden God".

In terms of what Ben Howard meant it to be, It's possible that the line "I lost my patience with the lord" is merely a reference to letting being frustrated with his current situation, thus it's a breakup song. I prefer the alternate reading though, makes the song far more interesting.

General CommentI'm not sure if it's just me, but the lyrics aren't showing up here. So here they are:

Falling from high places, falling through lost spaces
Now that we're lonely, now that there's nowhere to go
Watching from both sides, these clock towers burning up
I lost my time here, I lost my patience with it all

We lost faith, in the arms of love

    Where've you been hiding lately?
Where've you been hiding from the news?
    Because we've been fighting lately
We've been fighting with the wolves
    With the wolves
    Red tongues and hands

Falling from high places, falling through lost spaces
Now that we're lonely, now that we're so far from home
Watching from both sides, these tower's been tumbling down
I lost my mind here, I lost my patience with the lord

We lost faith, in the arms of love

    Where've you been hiding lately?
Where've you been hiding from the news?

General CommentI think it's important to note the comma separating "We lost faith" and "in the arms of love"

I honestly believe it's an expression of losing that religious faith. Ben is questioning, basically, 'Where are you god, while the world burns?'

His frustration is remedied with the "We lost faith, in the arms of love" line. Losing faith in a superior being meant finding faith in humanity, in love that is reciprocated and emphatic.

I think it's a beautiful expression of atheism. I could be wrong. But it's a wonderful song nonetheless.

General CommentI feel that this song, instead of being about losing faith that there is a God, is about losing faith in the absolute justice and goodness of God. The singer doesn't seem to be debating God's existence, but wondering why bad things happen to good people, why there are so many "wolves" in the world, etc., and from there questioning God's love.

General CommentI'm so pumped someone else got this one! Uknowwhoiam nailed it - its the type of thing that, if you understand what Howard understands, it just clicks and seems so obvious; if you can't get on his level, you will probably think of this in a religious way or something silly like that.

Get used to this -- true artists in a society tend to be more aware of the scum and evil that evades the attention of so many others. We should expect to see more and more artists writing about 9/11, but of course such references will have to be veiled and vague (otherwise say bye bye to record deals)

This is quite simply a wake up song -- where have you been? Why are you hiding from the news? Its tough news, it really is -- but it will in time retore your "faith in the arms of love", which was so shattered by the violent coup of 9/11/2001 and everything it has begat.

This is where our renewal will begin. Until you stop hiding from the news (and more people awaken each day!), we cannot move forward as a species. We have been fighting "the wolves", but we need your help!

There is no more important message today than this.

General CommentI have a slightly different suggestion for the meaning of this song.. Bear with me and let me know your thoughts!

Just gonna jump straight into it and suggest 'falling from high places' could be referring to 'the fall of man' as described in Genesis..(Is Ben Howard from a Christian family??) and that the whole song is about How 'we' have fallen from being with god (so a slight gospel message..)

'I lost my time here, I lost my patience with it all' =we lost our 'time'/position in heaven (relationship with god); we were impatient with the lord and turned a away..

AND AS A RESULT: our time (ie lives) are now limited= 'clock towers burning up', whereas before 'the fall' our lives were eternal. We are now lonely and isolated- unsatisfied and incomplete because of our separation from god= 'Now that we're lonely, now that there's nowhere to go'

'We lost faith in the arms of love'= we were once with god (i.e the 'arms of love') but we lost faith in him and are now separated; lonely, fighting our sin (I'll get onto this..)

'Where you been hiding lately' I think is referring to the gospel belief that we are all hiding from god, which, again alludes to and links us to the 'fall of man story'-Man (Adam and eve) hid from god after sinning and turning away from him.
I think he suggests we (like them) are constantly all hiding from god- and so he asks where we've been hiding lately!
I may be reading into this a bit much, its just its the only thing I can think of which would allow all the lyrics to have a coherent meaning..
I'll go on a bit more..

'the news'= the gospel news and thus he suggests we are all hiding from the 'news' ie the gospel? These two lines however could also possibly be paraphrasing what was said to him in the past- referring to someone who asked him such questions; condemning him (street preachers or a parent maybe?) which could therefore subvert the whole song meaning to it saying how he got tired of hearing it (Christianity) and turned away from it. 'The lord' could also be paraphrasing a parent for example..

    (Almost done!)
The biggest question is what are 'the wolves', here is my suggestion: So, to recap, (I think) he alludes to our fall away from god ('the arms of love';'the lord'). Similarly, he talks of our current state of separation from god (in essence our 'human condition'- ('Now that we're lonely, now that there's nowhere to go'). He now goes into it further to talk of our consequential battle with sin and I guess the 'demons' of this world so to speak.. these being the 'wolves' which as a result of 'the fall' we now all have to live with, in other words we battle with this 'sin'..('We've been fighting with the wolves')

And as a result our this battle and contact with sin we are now all guilty before god. This I get from the following line; 'Red tongues and hands' which paraphrases the saying of being 'caught red handed'; We are now stained with blood from these wolves; we are now all guilty as a result of our contact and battling with sin.

Just one more thing to add- the idea of fighting with sin (We've been fighting with the wolves, With the wolves, Red tongues and hands) is very much a Christian idea if it does in fact refer to sin.. The bible teaches that Sin was not always in us (ie before the fall) but it is now something that we must battle with because we have turned away from god and are now corrupted in nature..

He then leaves us with no solution to the problem of the position we now find ourselves in, hence, making the song a woe or saddened reflection to our 'mistake' at 'the fall' of turning away from god and not trusting him. So there you have it! Please respond and let me know what you think of my interpretation/ point out things I've missed!!

    Thanks

General CommentIt's talking a lot about finding his soul and coming to a realization with what reality really is. "We lost faith in the arms of love" refers to humanity forgetting to make love a priority. And "the wolves" refers to the government. I've always loved this song but the idea of this song being written about these ideas have just now hit me. We are in a time of awakening and a time of change for humanity.
