He can't sleep, he can't eat
He keeps thinking about her behind the locked door of her bedroom
As she knowingly tortures the shell that is left of her bridegroom
And what did he do to deserve
This whore of a wife who parades her disgrace to his face now
When he loved her and gave up his life in more ways than she knows how
And all I can say is that

Love is a terrible art
It's a hook in the heart
That can drag you on broken glass
And as you protest
The shards in your flesh
The hook tears out your chest
Until you're just a broken mess

Where is God in this rot?
Depraved, she commits the most heinous of sins and breaks her vows
But he loves her despite all the crimes she devises in his house
Where is God? I’ve been taught
That He’s close to the broken, it's true I have spoken with Him some
When I look in my brother's eyes I can see where his love comes from
And all he can say is that

Love is a terrible art
It's a hook in the heart
That can drag you on broken glass
And as you protest
The shards in your flesh
The hook tears out your chest
Until you're just a broken mess

But he has mercy on her lover and does not bleed him dry
A credit to his self-control
If it were me that monster would probably die

Love is a beautiful thing
She can make your heart sing
When you're walking on broken glass
She will open your eyes
Make your heart feel alive
Point you toward the sunrise
Help you leave all this broken mess behind

Love is a beautiful thing
Will you leave your broken mess behind?
Oh love is a beautiful thing
Will you leave your broken mess behind?

General CommentWow, this song really speaks to you from the side of being unconditionally loving toward someone who doesnt deserve it. And isn't this how God is with us? I'm just saying. This is what God goes through everyday with us, yet He still loves us unconditionally and waits for us to straighten up and come to Him.

General CommentHere's an interview where they talked about the song:

“Broken Mess” is tragic in the beginning and yet very hopeful at the end. Can you tell us the story behind this song?

Matt: Yeah, unfortunately it’s about something that happened to my brother. I don’t want to get into details about it, but it’s my response to a pretty dramatic situation that happened to him. I was on the road when I wrote it… I wrote it in 5 minutes into my phone as my mind was racing after learning some new stuff he had gone through. So I typed it all into my phone and I think we were at a show the next day and I sat in the trailer with an acoustic guitar and figured it out. I think when a lot of tragic things happen to me I put it in a song and I put it in a box so that it doesn’t haunt me. That’s like my grief. If I have it in a song then it’s there if I need to go to it. It won’t consume me on the inside it will be on the outside. So that was sort of like a grieving song, but at the same time there’s hope. And there’s reconciliation in my brother’s situation right now, so things are looking positive. So I definitely wanted to highlight that opportunity at the end of the song, for sure.
