This is the only voice I know
These are the only words I have
This is the only way I know how to say
We're not in love anymore

And it's the same way
That it's always been
The dynamic to the relationship never changes
And it's the same way
That it's always been
The dynamic to the relationship never changes

We used to like all the same bands
We used to have all the same friends
What do we have left in common
Just shared memories of good times
Long since passed
Long since passed

And it's the same way
That it's always been
The dynamic to the relationship never changes
And it's the same way
That it's always been
The dynamic to the relationship never changes

You can't get what you want from me
And I can't get what I need from you
This is the only voice I know
These are the only words I have
This is the only I can say
We're breaking up

And it's the same way
That it's always been
The same way
That it's always been
I'm not giving up on us
I'm not giving up on us

General CommentI think it's more or less a symbol of the band parting ways with their old ways of music and taking on a new form. White Crosses in general symbolize death and the end of something, the death of their old ways. Just some food for thought although it can be taken as a cheap love song.

General Commentyeah, i did consider the possibility that it wasn't about a relationship, because tom's lyrics are usually so good that i thought there had to be another level to the song. and there still might be, i don't actually know, but one verse in particular gives me the impression that it's about a person:

"We used to like all the same bands
We used to have all the same friends
What do we have left in common
Just shared memories of good times"

it's certainly not irrefutable evidence, but i just don't see how anything but a human being could like the same bands and have the same friends as someone else. i dunno, maybe it's just steeped in metaphor. i hope so, in any event.

General CommentI think you're right on Turtlefox, great thinking! Some of the lines don't really make much sense if the song was about a couple, but total sense if it was Tom speaking to his old fans that have left him. For example:

"This is the only voice I know
These are the only words I have
This is the only way I know how to say
    We're not in love anymore"

What an amazing, honest, and firm of way of expressing how he has changed, but still writes music from the heart. I know the ill feelings that come from a band changing, but the most important part of AM!'s music is their brutal honesty, which I feel they have kept. The band could have just kept writing the same ol' lyrics and still have gotten a great record deal; have you heard how catchy this music is? Instead we get an honest progression of thinking that many of us old "punks" getting into our late 20's are experiencing ourselves.

General CommentI agree with turtlefox..This whole album seems to be a response to the critics who don't look past Reinventing Axl Rose...Even though the emotion changes with each record I still feel like it's all about passion. That is one thing that you cannot take away from this band. The sing about what is on their minds and how they feel and that is exactly why Tom Gable might be the voice of the over 25 year old generation. This whole album is complete and well thought out. There is not a time that I doubt this band.

General CommentAnd, btw, if the song was about a relationship, the lyrics 'I'm not giving up on us' just would not fit in. But as it is, it's the line that tells 'we know our direction in music and haven't said everything yet'. Leave the panic to the critics and unloyal fans.

General CommentSomebody suggested to me that this was about Warren leaving the band...the song becomes so much better when you think of it like that.

"We used to like all the same bands" - Warren and Tom used to have the same musical taste, Tom's is changing.

"What do we have left in common, just shared memories of good times long since passed" - They had a lot of good times in the band's early days, but it just isn't the same anymore

"You can't get what you want from me" - A hardcore punk group

"And I can't get what I need from you" cooperation with the direction the band is heading in.

"I'm not giving up on us" - Warren is leaving the band, but Tom is still going ahead with his music.

My InterpretationThis song is amazing. so amazing. It's clearly about a breakup, theres just that. There's no ludicrous symbology, this song is right here telling you what it is. That last two chorus/bridges are so intense, I love it. Against Me! blows me away with every album
