It was just before the moon hung
Her weary, heavy hating
the gallows and the graves hold
the milky, milky cradle
His tears have turned to poppies
shimmer in the midnight
Flower in the twilight
a Flower in the twilight

And our screaming
is in his screaming
our screaming in
the willow

They took him to the gallows,
He fought them all the way though,
And When they asked us how we knew his name
We died just before him
our eyes are in the flowers
our hands are in the branches
our voices in the breezes

And our screaming
is in his screaming
our screaming in
the willow tree

We're waiting by the willow
our milky, milky cradle
our lockets long have rusted
his picture worn and weathered
our hair is in the garden
our voices in mitosis
our wombs are in the blossoms
our arms are in the branches

And our screaming
is in his screaming
our screaming in
the willow tree

And our screaming
is in his screaming
our screaming in
the willow

General CommentI don't know the circumstances, but it sounds to me like a group of some sort went to take a man to punish him with death for something (maybe he's a criminal or they think he is, anyways). His daughters (or schizophrenic daughter) saw them taking him away and started screaming, and the people found out they were his daughters so they shot them. the talk about the tree is I think just their ghosts remaining in the trees (maybe they lived in a forest)
it makes me think of early america, perhaps salem, personally. something about cocorosie always says witchcraft XD

General CommentI think that this song is about their (Sierra's and Bianca's) relationship to Antony Hegarty from Antony and the Johnsons

General CommentIts about a love that is so strong that when they (whether it be lovers or sisters) were going to lose the person they took it upon themselves to preform a ritual suicide in order to keep themselves together. the willow tree could represent a place or memory that is significant to the individuals, a place that they felt safe and comfortable with, where they knew they would be reuinited in the afterlife.

General CommentI wonder if this is connected to several other songs and is about their half-brother Simon. I read that he died before they started their The Adventures of Ghosthorse and Stillborn and that the album is partly about that. In the liner notes to that album they've written, "Dedicated in loving memory to: Simon and Simon". (I have no idea why Simon is written twice.)

But to me the lyrics in the following album, Grey Oceans, seem to reference their brother more directly. Lemonade is the only song that I'm aware of where his name is mentioned directly (not on the album, but in most other versions Bianca sings "oh Simon" after the line "calling out his name"). So it seems Lemonade's beginning is about Simon's death. (Summer Breeze doesn't mention Simon, that's a common mistake online.)

Then there's Gallows, also on Grey Oceans, and its music video. For some reason I have a feeling that the twin sisters are Sierra and Bianca, and the man that dies is Simon. Not literally, because it's a story about sisters committing suicide and dying before the man, but figuratively.

Then there's Bloody Twins, from Ghosthorse and Stillborn. Someone wrote there that it seems like a predecessor to Gallows.

Then there's The Moon Asked the Crow, from Grey Oceans, which actually has the lyrics "Angel brother, I miss your hair / Careless nature, gentle stare / You fell like rain in the dark abysses / Kissed the lips of bloody twinsis". So it references the song Bloody Twins, and obviously their brother.
