"Are You Satisfied?" as written by and Marina Diamandis....
I was pulling out my hair
The day I cut the deal
Chemically calm
Was I meant to feel happy?
But my life was just about to change

One life pretending to be
The cat who got the cream
Oh, everybody said
Marina is a dreamer
People like to tell you what you're gonna be
It's not my problem if you don't see what I see
And I do not give a damn if you don't believe
My problem is my problem
That I never am happy
It's my problem, it's my problem
That I never will succeed

Are you satisfied with an average life?
Do I need to lie to make my way in life?

High achiever don't you see
Baby, nothing comes for free
They say I am a control freak
Driven a greed to succeed
Nobody can stop me

'Cause it's my problem
If I want to pack up and run away
It's my business if I feel the need to
Smoke and drink and swear
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

Are you satisfied with an average life?
Do I need to lie to make my way in life?
Are you satisfied with an average life?
Do I need to lie to make my way in life?
Are you satisfied with an easy ride?
Once you cross the line
Will you be satisfied?

Sad inside, in this life, unsatisfied, praying
Sad inside, in this life, unsatisfied, waiting

Are you satisfied with an average life
Do I need to fly to make my way in life

Are you satisfied with an easy ride
Once you cross the line
Will you be satisfied?

Are you satisfied?
Are you satisfied?
Are you satisfied?
Are you satisfied?
Are you satisfied?
Are you satisfied?
Are you satisfied?
Are you satisfied?

General CommentWow. Pop music with meaning. Marina is a genius. With her pop sensibility I think she might be able to reach a wider audience than an alternative artist might. To me, this song is about understanding that if you're unhappy with something in your life, you have the power to change it. If you're depressed, seek help. If you're bored, do something fun, life is what you make it. A lot of people are self-defeating and do the opposite of what's going to help a negative situation.

    Genius.

General CommentI dont think its mocking at all. I think its the truth about her life she is never satisfied and questions how anyone could ever be satisfied with an average life. this album deals with mediocrity and how Marina is looking to be the best full stop at any costs.

its not her problem if you dont understand because she has her eye on the prize. on this, she decides that she is in fact satisfied with the journey to her destiny. "greed to succeed" - she is clearly troubled by some of its consequences but her hunger for this dream is clearly most important to her.

i have to say i think the album is a lot darker than people are making it out to be, which is of course the beauty of music. i do believe though as it is written it is the tale of someone troubled by this greed to succeed. it comes up so often, nearly every track. its most clear on "Are You Satisfied", "Rootless", "Numb", "Oh No!", "Mowgli's Road". brilliant album. i really connect with it. it hits too close to home a lot of the time but thats good sometimes

General CommentThis song is NOT a feminist anthem, lol. It's full of girl-on-girl hate. Which really disappointed me, I was totally psyched about Marina until I heard this song! I still think she's great but this song let me down.

To quote somebody else who said it wonderfully:

"I can't stand to hear a woman say she thinks likes a guy, or hates women because they're all catty. That's misogyny. The very fact that you, as a woman, think differently than how a socially-stereotyped woman is supposed to think is proof that our gender "norms" are fucking us over.

Women are not all alike. Some of us like football. Some of us like talking on the phone. Some of us like religion. Some of us are emotional. Some of us speak three languages. Some of us have boyfriends. Some of us have girlfriends. Some of us wear lipstick. Some of us don't shave our pits. Some of us have kids. Some of us worry that we'll drop our best friend's baby.

Now please stop claiming that you don't act like a woman. It doesn't make you a special snowflake, it makes you a perpetrator of misogyny."

General CommentTo me this is a song about being who you are and not giving a crap what people think, not conforming. She's mocking people that live their lives the way society dictates, asking if they're happy being average. But I think the interpretations above make a lot of sense too!

My InterpretationThis song talks about being different and wanting it to stay that way no matter what. She has a goal in her life and no matter what happens, she'll keep pursuing it. She keeps asking "us", the "listeners/spectators": "Hey, do you have a dream as well or do you just go with the flow?"

"Are you satisfied with an average life?
Do I need to lie to make my way in life?

Are you satisfied with an easy ride?
Once you cross the line will you be satisfied?"

With this, she wants to tell us she isn't happy with taking things easy, but fighting for them against all odds. She doesn't want to change her character just because she might have succeeded in one thing. There are many more things to do, much more to accomplish. She doesn't go with the flow, she cuts her way just the way she is. A fighter. A coward. A human.

"I was pulling out my hair
The day I cut the deal
    Chemically calm
Was I meant to feel happy
That my life was just about to change?

    One life pretending to be
The cow who got the cream
    Oh, everybody said
    Marina is a dreamer

People like to tell you what you're gonna be
It's not my problem if you don't see what I see
And I do not give a damn if you don't believe

    My problem is my problem
    That I never am happy
It's my problem, it's my problem
On how fast I will succeed

    Cause it's my problem
If I wanna pack up and run away
It's my business if I feel the need to
    Smoke and drink and swear

It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
It's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die"

Sad inside because she's not quite accomplished yet, she prays for her future. Nevertheless, she's satisfied if all she has to do is wait and pray. She's not about to go change for anyone, will cut her path just the way she is, even if it takes years.

    "Sad inside
    In this life
    I'm satisfied praying
    Sad inside
    In this life
    I'm satisfied waiting"

    Constructive comments more than welcome.

General CommentThis song has a huge amount of meaning for me, because I totally agree with it. I think Marina is singing about how she needs her life to be something more than what other people have, she will never be satisfied with an average life, but she is happy to wait for her life to become extraodinary. I think that is the simple analysis, and that is exactly how I feel about life, and that's why I struggle not to cry everytime I hear this song.

Another analysis I think I can see is that the song is in two voices, one (presumably Marina) who wants a great, above average life, and another who just sits around withing for things to happen. I think Marina is the one who says lines like 'High achiever, don't you see?
    Baby, nothing comes for free
They say I'm a control freak
Driven by a greed to succeed
Nobody can stop me' and, definately
'Are you satisfied with an easy ride?
Once you cross the line will you be satisfied?'

And the other voice, which I think could be another side of Marina, like she is arguing with herself, has lines like
    'Sad inside
    In this life
    I'm satisfied praying
    Sad inside
    In this life
    I'm satisfied waiting'

The second voice is happy to let life unfold, but they still want something amazing to happen, but the first voice wants to make it happen, because she's not satisfied with living like this. I think the second voice is the one who says the 'it's my problem' lines.

I absolutely love this song, it really gets me every time, it's basicly my anthem, because I want to decide which voice I am, because right now I'm the second, and I don't like that, and I think that's what the song it about.
Just my opinion though, comments welcome.
