He headed out to rub elbows with oysters today
What a special little sap to think the pearls fall in your lap
Oh lord, he saw it coming, from miles away
From where it's plain to see because we have a window seat

And we swore
At the top of our lungs

Riddle me this
What can you find
That always chews on the bitter end?
Riddle me this
In your hindsight
While you ride a white elephant

He headed out with a white flag and axes to grind
What a special little schmuck to decide he's getting up
Oh lord, I tried to show you, you're miles away
From where it's crystal clear, because the fog is living here for now

Riddle me this
What can you find
That always chews on the bitter end?

While you ride a white elephant

We love to live in days way back when
Wondering what could have been
If we had a time machine, a cure for cold feet

General CommentI think the song is about condemning those who live in the past, dwell on past wrongs and misfortunes.

    Riddle me this
    What can you find
That always chews on the bitter end? (chew on = contemplate)
    Riddle me this
    In your hindsight
While you ride a white elephant (white elephant = heavy burden one cannot lose)

General CommentMy interpretation of the first two lines:
"He headed out to all levels, oceans away.
It's a special kind of sign, to make the birds fall in your line."
Seems to make more sense to me, but then again this is Fair to Midland we're talking about.

Oh, and I hear "If we had a time machine, a cure for cold feet, might not play these waiting games." Those lyrics at the bridge there are fantastic.
