"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
No I don't know what to say, I just bleed it on the page
And let you motherfuckers scream it like I schemed it anyway
Straight from the heart I seethe like I'm a part
Of every breath you ever breath as I weave this wicked art
Homicidal, kill your idols
Your heroes are whores and your only god is you
Fuck the title, It's a brand new bible
A hymn for the condemned
This is the time, this is the word
Let me hear you sing Halle-Fuckin'-Lujah
Now is the time, time to burn
Let me hear you sing it
(Lord have mercy)
Don't believe the print, every word you read is shit
Yeah I've seen the second coming and it ain't these pricks
Don't get suckered in, yeah they'd sell their fucking skins
The lamb is the hand you hold and holds you down
And let you motherfuckers scream it like I schemed it anyway
