The alchemical comic stoned again in his class.
Old quantum mechanic says it's just out of gas.
Boom, subatomic, the singularity's here.
Hey, rolling collider, the horizon is near.

But one has to wonder, are we in or are we out?
Is it just a terrible blunder?

Atmospheric phenomenon and on.
Djinn and pentatonic all night long.

The good doctor's box, what a terrible riddle.
That poor damn cat split right down the middle.
In the void it rambles, rattles and rolls
while the comical alchemist grinds up his bones.

But one has to wonder, are we in or are we out?
Is it just a terrible blunder?

Atmospheric phenomenon and on.
Djinn and pentatonic all night long.

Atmospheric phenomenon and on.
Djinn and pentatonic all day long.

Atmospheric phenomenon and on.
Djinn and pentatonic all day long.

Atmospheric phenomenon and on.
Djinn and pentatonic all night long.

General Commentdjinn and pentatonic i would think is a play on words referring to "gin and tonic"

perhaps alluding to the scientists that use the hadron collider? is all this "science" really getting us anywhere? i'm guessing that's the general meaning.

General CommentNow these are some damn good lyrics, I always expect amazing lyrics from Neil but these are incredible.
Most of the references are pretty obvious but there are some awesome subtle ones too.

'The alchemical comic stoned again in his class.' Alchemy is a 'science' (supposedly) that is famous for getting nowhere and being completely pointless. Given that most of the song is about quantum mechanics, I'd say it is comparing quantum physicists to alchemists. Quantum mechanics often seems so ridiculous you seriously wonder if the people who came up with it all were on drugs. I know I have before. This stoned comical alchemist is a quantum physicist.

'Boom, subatomic, the singularity's here' A black hole is formed when mass is compressed to subatomic scales (due to its own weight) and forms a singularity. I'm not sure if there actually is a boom but it happens just as fast.

'Hey rolling collider, the horizon is near' The LHC is circular (rolling?) and some think it will make black holes and destroy the earth. Horizon is almost certainly referring to the event horizon, the boundary around a black whole from which no information (or anything else) can escape. Except Hawking radiation but that is different.

'But one has to wonder, are we in or are we out?' Perhaps refers to quantum mechanical uncertainty, where something can be in two states (and even two places) at once until you check.

'Djinn and pentatonic all night long'
Djinn are Arabic supernatural beings, from where we get the word Genie. Pentatonic is a scale of music and to be honest I have no idea how this relates. The Djinn bit is probably just pointing out that quantum mechanics seems supernatural i guess?

'The good doctor's box, what a terrible riddle.
That poor damn cat split right down the middle.'
This refers to Schrödinger's Cat thought experiment. Basically there is a cat in a box hooked up to some cruel killing machine, a Geiger counter and a source of radiation, blah blah quantum mechanics (you can look it up if you want), and the whole point is the cat is not just either dead or alive until you look at it, it is actually both dead and alive. Split right down the middle.

'In the void it rambles, rattles and rolls
while the comical alchemist grinds up his bones.'
Not too sure what the first line is about, the second line is just saying how the quantum physicist is doing something useless (like an alchemist grinding bones).

So yeah, the song is about quantum mechanics (or just advanced physics in general, although everything referenced involves quantum mechanics) and how messed up it is, to the point that we could just be making a 'terrible blunder' chasing these djinns all day long. At least, this is my conclusion. Impressive song all the same.

General CommentFirst and formost, please allow me to correct a miss perception about Alchemy. The above statement "' Alchemy is a 'science' (supposedly) that is famous for getting nowhere and being completely pointless." Could not be more incorrect.
Alchemy is actually the foundation of modern day Chemistry. IN fact, the word Chemistry comes directly from the word Alchemy. Look it up. Also, FYI, Sir Issac Newton, The creator of the science of Physics, and definer of the laws of said physics, was an Alchemist... So to say Alchemy never went anywhere or being completely pointless, Is just flat out not true. We got chemistry and Physics out of it, so I'd say , went somewhere and made a damn good point.
Now to MY interpretation of Mr Fallon brilliant lyrics. I would absolutely agree this song is at least inspired by The Hadron superconducting/super collide, and the search for the Higgs/Bosin or "God" particle. It seems clear to me Mr Fallon is comparing the modern day search for this subatomic mystery particle
to the Alchemist search for the Philosophers stone, which one could use to turn lead into Gold. Which, to my knowledge, no Alchemist ever found or achieved. And since that was the main goal of the Alchemist, this would be why its said to have been a joke, was pointless, and didn't go anywhere.
Now, to title of the song, Djinn and Pentatonic...... I believe is a reference to super-string theory which many in the scientific don't consider a true science, simply we cannot make direct observation of these vibrating strings of energy.
So most of Quantum Mechanics denounce Super-string theory. BTW, Quantum Mechanics was the 50's......Einstein could not wrap his mind around it, Simply because the laws of Physic that Newton and Einstein defined break down and do not apply. Which brings me to the line "one has to wonder, are we in, or are we out?" I believe this the question the guys at Cern are asking themselves every time they fire up the Hadron, As they cross there fingers, smash subatomic particles together at damn near the speed of light in search for the god particle. Regardless of the songs meaning....It rocks ass. It could mean nothing, and I'd still love it. All Night Long......
