"Figure It Out" as written by Blair Daly and Dave Bassett....
With a swerve, my eyes avert
My mouth somehow forgets to work
So I stare until you shout
Wondering why you can't figure me out
With a change, recall the names
I'm spitting out words, hoping it works
Still I stare while they all shout
Why can't I even figure it out?

The time I'm wasting
Can't say where I've been
Catching my same old way
Slowly spin beneath the day
Your time I'm wasting
Can't say where we've been
Cause it seems to me that
Nothing's what it's ever meant to be

With my fate, my thoughts erase
My head's a blur, the picture fades
Eyes, they keep on shutting down
I can't see why you won't figure me out

The time I'm wasting
Can't say where I've been
Catching my same old way
Slowly spin beneath the day
Your time I'm wasting
Can't say where we've been
Cause it seems to me that
Nothing's what it's ever meant to be

Why can't you figure me out?
With a twist
My mind has missed
You said that I'd forget

The time I'm wasting
Can't say where I've been
Catching my same old way
Slowly spin beneath the day
Your time I'm wasting
Can't say where we've been
Cause it seems to me that
Nothing's what it's ever meant to be

Your time I'm wasting
Can't say where we've been
Cause it seems to me that
No one's ever who they're meant to be

General Commentthis song might be about how you spend your time trying to understand the people you encounter or know, but its a waste of time doing that cause you'll never be able to fully figure out who they are. no one can really ever truly figure people out. i don't know. what do you guys thinks?

Song MeaningSierra's thinking behind the song:

"I sat back and started going through my journal, phone and computer where I keep a mess of lyrics. I was drawn to all the things I had written when I was kind of going crazy. I felt very misunderstood and confused about why I am the way I am, which is constantly being lost in my head. This has led to people becoming extremely frustrated with me... very often. So this song was me trying to "figure it out." "

General Commenti've listened this cd about a thousand times and i think the whole cd and every song relates to someone's relationship with their lover. and this song is about how she desperately wants this guy to understand her, but he just doesn't and because of this, they fight constantly and they're wasting each other's time by trying to make it work.

My InterpretationTo me, this song is definitely about a girl, her present lover, and her past lovers. It's basically a song where the girl is wondering why her significant other (s) can't figure out who she is as a person. The beginning of verse 1 talks about her present lover.

"With a swerve, my eyes avert
My mouth somehow forgets to work"

-This here sounds like an argument. The "swerve" represents a bump in the road of their relationship. But she is the type of girl who doesn't know how to respond in these arguments with her lover. That's why her "eyes avert" and her "mouth forgets to work." She shuts down so it makes it hard to have a connection with her and work things out. Maybe because she has been in this situation before and it frightens her.

"So I stare until you shout
Wondering why you can't figure me out"

-Her lover gets frustrated here and starts to yell at her for not saying anything. Their fight could possibly be about something that frustrates him about her and she doesn't know how to respond because she thinks she is an understandable person. Maybe in her past she defended herself in this same argument and because it went wrong then, she is trying to be someone else to makes amends and not make the same mistake. Obviously they are not meant for each other because their personalities clash. It's probably why he doesn't understand her.

"With a change, recall the names
I'm spitting out words, hoping it works"

-Here is where her past lovers get into the picture. "With a change" may represent her boyfriend getting so stressed that he breaks up with her. "recall the names" may remind her of past relationships when things didn't work out because of the same reason that her current relationship didn't work.

"I'm spitting out words, hoping it works
Still I stare while they all shout
Why can't I even figure it out?"

    - I feel like she freaks out here because he is leaving her. "Spitting out words" sounds frantic so I think she starts to talk once he begins to leave. She may realize that he may be different than the others in the past and that defending herself with him may be the best course of action rather than staying quiet. Of course, I feel like he is so frustrated that he doesn't care about what she has to say anymore. "Still I stare while they all shout" makes me think that she is watching him while he walks away and all the arguments of her past relationships start to invade her mind. She finally admits that she can't even figure herself out; almost like a sign of defeat.

    "The time I'm wasting
    Can't say where I've been
    Catching my same old way
    Slowly spin beneath the day"

-Here she feels as though she is wasting her time in all these relationships. She feels like she's not even present in any of them because she never knows who she really is. "catching my same old way'" sounds like she is talking about all her past arguments. No matter what they always end up the same way and it always has to do with her and how she handles things. "Slowly spinning beneath the day" sounds like she is always in a dark place because of it.

    "Your time I'm wasting
    Can't say where we've been
Cause it seems to me that
Nothing's what it's ever meant to be"

-She admits here that she is wasting his time too. She feels like they haven't existed in their relationship because of the problems they are having. She also says that every relationship she gets in is never what she thinks it will be.

"With my fate, my thoughts erase
My head's a blur, the picture fades"

-Here it sounds like she is saying that because her fate is a life without him, all her thoughts about their future fade away. She also states that because he is gone everything in her head is a blur cause she doesn't understand what just happened and the picture of them fades away.

"Eyes, they keep on shutting down
I can't see why you won't figure me out"

-To me, the part about her eyes makes me think that she keeps crying because of what she lost. and "i can't see why you won't figure me out" makes me feel like she's asking him why he won't stay and make an effort to get to know who she really is.

"Why can't you figure me out?
    With a twist
    My mind has missed
    You said that I'd forget"

-The twist is the change in their relationship status. She says her mind has missed because she tried so hard to explain who she was as a person and her thoughts and feelings but he couldn't understand her mind. So she missed her goal. Maybe he told her that she would forget about everything that happened and just move on. But honestly that last line confuses me a bit with the story.

I love how she ends the song with-

"No one's ever who they're meant to be"

-This could go several ways. She could be talking about her boyfriend. Saying she had all these dreams for him and hope that he would stay even through their confusion, but he didn't have the patience so he isn't who she thought he would be. Or she's talking about how no matter how she tries to improve herself in each relationship they always end up the same way.

Anyway, I think this is what the song is about, but that's just me.
