How, how, how, how, how

I can't believe what you said to me
Last night when we were alone
You threw your arms up
Baby you gave up, you gave up

I can't believe how you looked at me
With your James Dean glossy eyes
In your tight jeans with your long hair
And your cigarette stained lies

Could we fix you if you broke?
And is your punch line just a joke?

I'll never talk again
Oh boy you've left me speechless
You've left me speechless, so speechless
And I'll never love again
Oh boy you've left me speechless
You've left me speechless, so speechless

I can't believe how you slurred at me
With your half wired broken jaw
You popped my heart seams
All my bubble dreams, bubble dreams

I can't believe how you looked at me
With your Johnnie Walker eyes
He's gonna get you and after he's through
There's gonna be no love left to rye

And I know that it's complicated
But I'm a loser in love
So baby raise a glass to mend
All the broken hearts
Of all my wrecked up friends

I'll never talk again
Oh boy you've left me speechless
You've left me speechless, so speechless

I'll never love again
Oh friend you've left me speechless
You've left me speechless, so speechless

How? Ha-ooh-wow? H-ow? Wow
Ha-ooh-wow? H-ow? Wow

And after all the drinks and bars that we've been to
Would you give it all up?
Could I give it all up for you?

And after all the boys and the girls that we've been through
Would you give it all up?
Could you give it all up?

If I promised boy to you
That I'll never talk again
And I'll never love again
I'll never write a song
Won't even sing along
I'll never love again

How, how, how so speechless
You left me speechless, so speechless baby

Will you ever talk again?
Oh boy, why you so speechless?
You've left me speechless, so speechless

Some men may follow me
But you choose "death and company"
Why you so speechless? Oh oh oh

    Song Meaning

gaga wrote this song for her dad when he was in the hospital due to heart complications (cause by his heavy drinking, which explains the references to alcohol/bars in the lyrics.) at first he refused to have the open heart surgery he got just last month and gaga told him that if he died because of his health she'd quit making music and spend the rest of her life taking care of her sister and mom. this is the song she wrote to convince him to go through with the operation. i'm not exactly sure but i think the song is written from her mom's perspective.

that being said this is my favorite song on the album! i wish it was only her and the orchestra though, no guitars/drums/etc. it would have been so much more powerful

    Song Meaning

This song was written for her father BEFORE he had open heart surgery, because he didn't want to have it done. Lady Gaga was afraid, therefor she wrote this song to persuade her father to have the surgery to save him.

    THIS SONG IS BEAUTIFUL.

her father is alive he had open heart surgery she wrote this song for him & sang it when she went to the hospital with him

its about loving a boy and going on with her life but the way that she will never stop loving her dad and that hes will be her main man forever. GaGa and her father are very close.

talking from how i relate to this song.. i see it as she knows this boy.. maybe hes good looking or she fancies him or just sees him as a friend.. but he says something to her that really gets to her and suddenly shes convinced she'll never love again or talk again cos shes fallen so in love with him.

and 'with your james dean glossy eyes' i know he was known for loads of things but one of the main things was he was a heartthrob.. and when she says stuff like 'tight jeans' etc, shes saying how hes so attractive and shes in love with him.

shes saying would you give up all the bars and girls and boys to be with me.

but i know its actually about her dad to there ya go

Oh man, this is her best song. So incredibly beautiful, I got tears in my eyes when I first heard it. As people have said, this is about her father and her pleading with him to go through with his surgery. Without him, she won't be able to love...she won't even be able to speak. She won't be inspired to write music, she won't even care to listen to it anymore. That's such a sad concept. I'm glad it all worked out.

    Uh. Amazing.

Best song on the album IMHO...totally turned me into a Lady Gaga fan, which is interesting cause just the other day, I was talking to a friend about how I thought she was overrated...

    Song Meaning

This song is written about and for her father. She talks about it during her live performances. Also "To Rye" is a term meaning to grow as rye grass does in the spring. Here is a link to one of her performances where you can hear it for yourself. (Live in San Francisco; Monster's Ball 2009) 12/14

Standing On The Edge Of Summer
Thursday
In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

The Night We Met
Lord Huron
This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines: "Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet" So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other: "I had all and then most of you" Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart "Some and now none of you" Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship. This was the perfect song for "13 Reasons Why"

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."

Just A Little Lovin'
Dusty Springfield
I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example: "'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/

American Town
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran shares a short story of reconnecting with an old flame on “American Town.” The track is about a holiday Ed Sheeran spends with his countrywoman who resides in America. The two are back together after a long period apart, and get around to enjoying a bunch of fun activities while rekindling the flames of their romance.
