I am the man in the mirror.
My reflection, I aspire to be.
In your reflection what do you see?
False fault or a masterpiece?
But a masterpiece starts with a single stroke
and empires start in an open field.
(I am the man in the mirror)

But a masterpiece starts with a single stroke.

If we could all be steadfast suddenly, then we'd never build a life worth living.
So let us restore each other.

I am the man in the mirror.
My reflection, I aspire to be.
In your reflection what do you see?
False fault or a masterpiece?
I am the man in the mirror.

The mirror

So let us restore each other,
not with haste, but gently,
for an empty cup cannot fill another.
A blank canvas will later be priceless,
and the love that we build will be endless.
Though we all stumble, we will not fall.

I am the man in the mirror.
My reflection, I aspire to be.
In your reflection what do you see?
False fault or a masterpiece?
We will build masterpieces out of these faults.
(I am the man in the mirror)

So when I stare back into my own eyes
I try to peer past, and try to understand.
My imperfections compose my composure
and I can live with them and you will live by me.
So let us restore each other, not with haste, but gently,
for an empty cup, an empty cup cannot fill another.

When i first heard this song I wasn't paying close attention to the words but i thought it said "I am the man in the mirror, I'm punching spider feet!" haha that made me laugh so hard.

Definitely my favorite song on the C.D. Ending is sick.

What i take away most from the song, is that you can choose how you see yourself in "the mirror".

    Song Meaning

Okay so I believe I know what this song is pretty much saying. This song is saying that we can be whatever we want to be, by saying "I am the man in the mirror" the singer meens that he is himself and he can be whatever he wants to be. When they say the thing about empty glasses filling eachother he meens if you put someone down, it's like making them an empty glass and they cant make others feel better when they already feel bad about themselves. Therefore creating a chain of hate. They want people to give compliments to fill another person's glass. That way they can "Fill another person's glass" by complimenting them. Therefore making the world a better place. This is just what I think though.

Haha, the first time I heard this song I though it said, It's fun to masturbate! instead of False fault or a masterpiece?

And the lyrics after that being, But a masterpiece starts with a single stroke Made me so confused, and I laughed. Ahahaha. xD

But I definitely think Jordan has the right idea about the meaning. (:

    Song Meaning

I feel that this song is about two people starting out in a relationship still bearing the burden of past hurts from old relationships.. They have to try and grow together and be better for each other.. Sort of like supporting each other cause they know they're both still so vulnerable and insecure, but they really want to make it work?

That's how I relate to it anyway. :)

“Our limitations and success will be based, most often, on your own expectations for ourselves. What the mind dwells upon, the body acts upon” (Denis Waitley). You need to believe in yourself and create your own destiny. "For an empty cup cannot fill another." If you do not know what to do at times, then your no help to anyone else. And remember, the time in between is the most valuable...

I think that the line "I am the man in the mirror/ My reflection I aspire to be" means that you should aspire to be yourself and not to pretend that you are someone that your not

and the line "So let us restore each other, not with haste, but gently, for an empty cup cannot fill another" means that we shouldn't try to alter someone else beliefs to something better with haste but instead that they should do it gently so as not to cause harm to the person and the empty cup part sounds like it means like if your not living out what you believe in then you will never be able to help out someone else

    Song Meaning

The song is about being yourself and helping other people become who they really are. Simple enough. The chorus and the ending says it all

    My Interpretation

It seems to be a reference to James 1:23-25

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,
