I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

I believe this isn't literally about him being in someones nightmare, its more like his life is something some people have nightmares about, whether its a breakup or whatever. Hes explaining how he's experiencing something difficult.
after reading your comment, it just hit me that this song could be about something like being responsible for screwing someone's life up, and having them tear themselves up hating you for it until the "house" is "flooded" and they both end up "drowning" in all that destruction. figuratively speaking, of course.<br /> <br /> just a thought...
yea there's no doubt that the literal interpretation of this song may be a little...graphic. but i don't think any band writes a song with something like that as the sole message. instead, i think the song is supposed to deal with something much simpler, like the feeling of being trapped in a relationship, or being involved in an overbearing one.
and i think it's important to take the phrase "stranger's nightmare" into consideration. it intrigues me that this "nightmare" is supposed to be the "stranger's" instead of the one "starring" in it.
I think this song is about being in a relationship with someone generally unbearable to most, and even unbearable to the singer in the beginning. The person is only looking for love. The singer begins to see all the other person's faults as endearing.
It's a "stranger's nightmare" but it's his dream, and he doesn't want to change, even if they're both going down. "We're going to flood this house."
@wooptyfriggindoo I interpreted this a very similar way. In the relationship, it is only a nightmare to the stranger, and in a way, could speak of their hypocritical actions. To them, they despise and fear a clingy relationship, yet that is what they are in the relationship. But their faults are seen and understood, empathized for, and like you phrased it, they "are both going down" in their endeavor of love. <-- yes I said endeavor of love, possible rephrasing anyone?
I think this song is about stockholm syndrome, wherein someone is being held captive but comes to empathize or even play along with the delusional captor. At least it makes sense, given the lyrics.
I am sure they wanted to leave the interpretation open for their listeners... BUT the whole album 'Weathervanes' was put together based on the dreams of Judah Dadone. So this song is literally about starring in someones nightmare, in which he was quieted with a tube sock and drowned in a bath tube. Since dreams are the gateway to ones unconscious mind it is fair to say it may be about an ex or something. But the songs intention is not to be about the hypothetical ex... or whatever
Guys, I think I've got this figured out perfectly. It came to me because I randomly thought of the line "shut me up with your long tube-socks, they don't scream 'hey, let's just be friends." This is how I interpret it because it's what I'm going through with a girl right now. She has a boyfriend... but really wants me... and yeah, that's a mess lol.

2) "How many stars do you think you possess? How many in your butterfly net?" This is another way of saying "how many guys do you think you can get? How many different guys are you messing around with right now?"
3) "This is me starring in a stranger's nightmare." Well, if I had a girlfriend that were hooking up with some dude, that'd be an absolute nightmare. She's hooking up with him and making that nightmare a reality for her boyfriend, a guy that the singer hasn't met, hence the use of the word stranger.
Is it a coincidence that the lines "how many STARS do you think you possess" works in that context me "this is me STARRING in a stranger's nightmare?" I think not!!!
