The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.
Based on guilt this society thrives, as the world crumbles before our eyes
From the dawn of time it's been a slow decline, as we look for something we'll never find
WE destroy everything...
Searching for meaning in this empty life, holding to something that will keep us alive
We can't stop the clock, can't turn back time, as we look for something we'll never find
WE destroy everything...
WE destroy everything in sight
Now the earth is a wasteland
And the apocalypse breeds
As the smoke passes there's nothings left, this devastation will not be felt
Are we immune to what's become of this place, to late to change our destructive ways?
WE destroy everything...
WE destroy everything in sight
Too late to turn back time.
From the dawn of time it's been a slow decline, as we look for something we'll never find
WE destroy everything...
Searching for meaning in this empty life, holding to something that will keep us alive
We can't stop the clock, can't turn back time, as we look for something we'll never find
WE destroy everything...
WE destroy everything in sight
Now the earth is a wasteland
And the apocalypse breeds
As the smoke passes there's nothings left, this devastation will not be felt
Are we immune to what's become of this place, to late to change our destructive ways?
WE destroy everything...
WE destroy everything in sight
Too late to turn back time.
