"Kings And Queens" as written by and Jared Leto....
Whoa! Whoa! Whoa!

Into the night
Desperate and broken
The sound of a fight
Father has spoken

Whoa! Whoa! Whoa!

We were the Kings and Queens of promise
We were the victims of ourselves
Maybe the Children of a Lesser God
Between Heaven and Hell
Heaven and Hell

Into your lives
Hopeless and Taken
We stole our new lives....through blood and name
In defense of our dreams
In defense of our dreams

We were the Kings and Queens of promise
We were the victims of ourselves
Maybe the Children of a Lesser God
Between Heaven and Hell
Heaven and Hell

The age of man is over
A darkness comes at dawn
These lessons that we learned here
Have only just begun

We were the Kings and Queens of promise
We were the Phantoms of ourselves
Maybe the Children of a Lesser God
Between Heaven and Hell

We are the Kings
We are the Queens
We are the Kings
We are the Queens

Whoa! Whoa! Whoa!

My OpinionHmm, Ill give it a shot. Btw, it should be "We were the VICTIMS of ourselves" not "phantoms"

    V1-"Into the night"...
I think this verse means confronting reality and suffering because of it

Chorus- "We were the Kings and Queens of promise.."
(Past tense) Our potential has been corrupted by our ambitions. Worshiping a "lesser god" (aka money, sex, power). "Between Heaven and Hell" meaning not quite good and not quite evil. Or probably, of the earth... worshiping man-made values and not the ones the devil or God has given us.

    V2- "Into your lives..."
We were so desperate for our new ambitions that we harmed others

V3- "The age of man is over.."
We're basically destroying ourselves and the "lessons that we learned...have only just begun" could mean that we have to learn to live with the decisions we've made

"We are the Kings, We are the Queens" x2
(Present tense) I see this as a more hopeful stance. They dont say "of promise" because we are already past that promise. Though we've made mistakes, we learn from them, correct them and live with them to stand tall as Kings and Queens the way we are now

General CommentThis song borrows many ideas from the Gnostic belief system and existential philosophy. Jared said the idea from the song was taken from a book in their studio which could easily have contained these Ideas.
Gnosticism believes that an imperfect god created the world, and all things in it, and nothing is perfect because it was created by an imperfect god. Nietzsche wrote a parable about the death of God in his "Gay Science" which is used to show how people no longer look to God for their assertion of right and wrong and now moral right and wrong is decided by each person through their actions.

The first verse, "Into the night Desperate and Broken..." shows people coming into this time where God is no longer there to help them make their choices and fights have broken out by people disagreeing over what makes something morally right, and religion plays a big part in this fight as it makes note of "Father has spoken."

The Chorus then is about how the age of religion has risen and fallen. With the prophesises of the Kings and Queens over people are only phantoms of what they were created to be and who they were during this age of religion. "Maybe the children of a lesser god" shows how people are imperfect and must make their own decisions without relying on God. "Between Heaven and Hell" says that people live on Earth and rule this realm for themselves.

"Into your lives hopeless and taken..." is about how people will no longer be held captive under the yoke of religion and break free to accomplish their dreams by making their own decisions.

"The age of Man is over..." follows Nietzsche's idea of the ubermensch, which means overman, about how after the death of God and ultimate morality people will have to progress into a people who make their own morality. People will no longer be human beings, mankind, but a greater being by asserting their own morality.

"We are the Kings, We are the Queens..." then asserts our place of prominence in this new age of being greater beings.

Please comment. I would love to hear what you have to say on my interpretation.

General CommentThis song is about the destruction that humanity has created upon itself. We are ending ourselves. But the song makes it seem like the end is okay. I feel as if it's suggesting humanity's acceptance of it's demise simply because our time is over. We had our chance, we had our lives, but we didn't do what was necessary to create a better world. now it's up to the universe to take us away.
I love the line "children of a lesser god between heaven and hell". It's like we're too naive and narcissistic to see that the God we know (or think we know) isn't at all what we hope to be, much less deserve. A beautiful song that could change the world.

    Song MeaningInto the night
    Desperate and broken
    The sound of a fight
    Father has spoken

The struggle of man's inner darkness combating the goodness suppressed in man's heart. This can also be seen as the nurturing voice of God.

We were the Kings and Queens of promise
We were the victims of ourselves
Maybe the Children of a Lesser God
    Between Heaven and Hell
    Heaven and Hell

Long before the onset of our hedonistic intentions and selfish interests before ourselves, we were the future all the rest of us depended on. But we became the victims of our own ambitious and selfish desires and dreams that didn't contribute to the weak, the broken, and the damned. We would idolize things of materialistic value. We contributed to a weaker greatness and let what matters become forgotten or condemned. A neutral people we've become, neither our dark totality or our most virtuous.

    Into your lives
    Hopeless and Taken
    We stole our new lives
    Through blood and pain
    In defense of our dreams
    In defense of our dreams

We justified our designs and convictions through the sacrifice of others, weaker than ourselves. We took and took and never returned to those who could give their all only to be unrewarded and become lost to the mercy of humanity.

We were the Kings and Queens of promise
We were the Phantoms of ourselves
Maybe the Children of a Lesser God
    Between Heaven and Hell
    Heaven and Hell

    (Repeated verse)

The age of man is over
    A darkness comes and all
These lessons that we learned here
    Have only just begun

Our way of life as we know it shall come to pass and end at our own hands. We are an immature children that must learn from our mistakes. We've only began to understand ourselves and our world. The end is essentially only the beginning as we take on new lessons from our mistakes.

We were the Kings and Queens of promise
We were the victims of ourselves
Maybe the Children of a Lesser God
    Between Heaven and Hell

    (Repeated verse)

    We are the Kings
    We are the Queens
    We are the Kings
    We are the Queens

A sublime reminder of who we are and who we can still live up to be. The kings and queens of our destiny, our future. Will we take this message with our hearts and work together to achieve our dreams, or better mankind? Which is right or wrong now?

Song MeaningTo make it as religious as possible which is what it seems to be:

the night before Israel was supposed to enter the Promised Land that their Father told them was theirs to take, they sent spies to check it out, but they came back fearing that the people of the land would destroy them and not trusting God's word. We were shadows of what we were meant to be as the image bearers of God and became children of wrath [or Satan] through our disobedience. I have no clue about the middle verse but the last hints to an afterlife in which we will know the reason for our existence. That is what we are all after, right?

We are the kings and queens of a new promise through Jesus Christ our Lord

    Song Meaningkings and queens
for me the title tell the story.
its about us the one who rule our self
    the one who make choice
the one who suffer for our own mistake.

    we make the choice
no one can tell u what to do
    but can guide u.

in the end you are the one who rule
    choose,and suffer.
for the choice that we have made.

you are the kings and queens
    for your self.....
