How can I sleep?, they're trying to hurt me
Stay there and don't pretend to cry
cause they're waiting for me

to run, to run

Tell me how can I sleep?
They try to haunt me, haunt me
They can't take back whats mine

Cause they're waiting for me to come
and I'll sing this song
and there's nothing they can do
but sit and die

All you can do is watching me
when I stand still here and say
I never meant to have nothing to do with this
but it's the only way

I'm sorry but I'll leave your place so empty (so empty)
and notice that you're not there (you're leaving me)

What you're looking for, these are the same old strange days
In which I throw my life away
But nothing's gonna happen, nothing's going to change
I said I'd bring disaster, imagine we'd ever change

What you're looking for, take your book and sleep on it
Tomorrow you'll be better, I swear

And things you stole, you sold em tongue
I'm on my own, sleeping in a bed of swords
and still I could, sick in here among the wolves

See my point, do you see my point?
See my point, do you see my point?

    My Interpretation

I think this song is about incompetence, you know unable to help someone when they really need it.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
