"Clover" as written by and Brent Knopf....
If every tree points to a star
If every tree points to a star
I bent the tips all over
I set a snare for clover
I bent the tips all over

Nothing is as special as this
Nothing is as special as this
Nothing is as special as this

It's frustrated love
It's frustrated love

If I'm dreaming you and you're dreaming me
Then why don't we choose a different story
If I'm dreaming you and you're dreaming me
Then why don't we choose
If I'm dreaming you and you're dreaming me
Then why don't we choose a different story
If I'm dreaming you and you're dreaming me
So why, why

Probably forget to rememeber it
You'll probably forget to remember it
(Probably forget)
This fun, it feels like toil
(Remember it)
So ripe it's going to spoil
(Probably forget)
This fun, it feels like toil
(To remember it, probably forget)
Would start to let us finish it
(Remember it, probably forget)
My heart wants just to know that it exists
(Remember it)
Would start to let us finish it

My heart, my heart, my heart, my heart, my heart

If I'm dreaming you and you're dreaming me
Then why don't we choose a different story
If I'm dreaming you and you're dreaming me
Then why don't we choose
If I'm dreaming you, then you're dreaming me
So why don't we choose a different story
(Why - if - this - dream - is - to - die)
If i'm dreaming you, then you're dreaming me
(Why - if - this - dream)
Then why

I do not understand
If time is smooth
If time is rough
I do no understand
If love must go
Away with trust

I may want you, but you don't want me
So why wouldn't it be better to leave
I may want you, but you don't want me
So why wouldn't it be better to leave
(If every tree)
I may want you, but you don't want me
(Points to a star)
So why wouldn't it be better to leave
(If every tree)
I may want you, but you don't want me
(Points to a star)
So why wouldn't it be better to leave
(If every tree)
My heart wants just to know that it exists
(Points to a star, if every tree)
My heart wants just to know
(Points to a star)

My InterpretationI think this song is about two people with feelings for each other who won't act upon it. Or, more precisely, one person who is convinced that the person they have feelings for feels the same but both refuse to do anything about it. And then by the end of the song he seems to realize that maybe the other person doesn't feel the same way.
"Nothing feels as special as this" and "frustrated love" is about how special the feelings between the two are and how both are too stubborn to do anything about the feelings that are obviously present, hence the frustration of the love.
"If I'm dreaming you and you're dreaming me/ then why don't we choose a different story" is obvious; if both of them feel the same then why aren't they doing something about it, or choosing a different story?
"My heart wants just to know that it exists" and the verse containing it showcases when he starts to feel doubts that the other person does actually feel the same and that perhaps he was seeing signs that weren't really there and misinterpreting them. He just wants some sort of recognition from the other person that he isn't the only one feeling anything. The good feelings he used to get from being with the other person are starting to turn bad because he is second-guessing the relationship he saw between the two of them.
The final verse is him giving up on everything; he realizes that the feelings he has aren't being reciprocated, and though he thinks that it may be "better" if the relationship between the two ended, he won't let himself out because he still feels a glimmer of hope that there might be something bigger between them.

That's my interpretation- it could be wrong (I may have related it a bit too much to my life, but it just seems so relevant). Enjoy (:

General Commenti just wanted to make some suggestions on improving the lyrics:

if every tree points to a star,
i bend the tips all over (the tips of the trees)

    also,

this fun, it feel like toil
    so ripe it's gonna spoil

    also,

i do not understand, if time is smooth, if time is rough
i do not understand, if love must go, or will it return??? (the last part i can't really get)

that's just the way i heard it though! thought i would contribute :-)

love the song, such a great band!

General CommentAgreed - it's definitely "I bent (or maybe bend) the tips all over." It might also be "...or when it returns" instead of "or will it return," but the smooth/rough thing sounds right to me.

I feel like this is maybe the undiscovered theme song for "(500) Days of Summer." This guy is apparently in a casual relationship with somebody who he really has feelings for: it's just "fun," but he wants her (when she, of course, doesn't want him). This has the obvious consequences - he feels like he's laboring, like their time together has passed its expiration date, like she can just "choose a different story." There's a pretty deep level of emotional damage here, what with him being confused and frustrated, but his heart won't let him leave because he needs to know that requited love exists. (At least, that's my interpretation; the lyrics are of course intentionally vague about "it," which is maybe the point - if he doesn't know what it is he wants, how can he find it?) If I understand the stuff about trees correctly, it's a metaphor for him sort of reshaping her natural desires to make him the center: trees point to stars all on their own, but he's going to bend them over so they point at something else instead. Like I said - sort of the plot of "(500) Days of Summer" in a nutshell.

Or is it "promptly forget - to remember it"

    Seems more poetically apropos?

    General CommentI think it's

I may want you, but you don't want me,
so why wouldn't it be better to leave?

My heart wants just to know that it exists
My heart wants just to know..
    My heart wants just..

General CommentAnd that last line really gets me.

My heart wants just to know that it exists..
    and in his tone.
It's so sad, and it resonates in me.
Feeling love for a girl in the deepest of ways, a way you can't explain and which isn't reciprocated equally at all. You want to be wanted, but aren't, and it hurts. That's what I'm getting out of it.

Lyric CorrectionMy first post on here!
I thought this version of the lyrics had a few glaring errors, so I just decided to rewrite the whole thing. I left out nearly all punctuation for the sake of not misinterpreting the author's intent:
    ----
If every tree points to a star
If every tree points to a star
I bent the tips all over
I set a snare for clover
I bent the tips all over

Nothing is as special as this
Nothing is as special as this
Nothing is as special as this

    It's frustrated love
    It's frustrated love

If I'm dreaming you and you're dreaming me
Then why don't we choose a different story
If I'm dreaming you and you're dreaming me
    Then why don't we choose
If I'm dreaming you and you're dreaming me
Then why don't we choose a different story
If I'm dreaming me and you're dreaming me
    So why, why

    Probably forget to rememeber it
You'll probably forget to remember it
    (Probably forget)
This fun, it feels like toil
    (Remember it)
So ripe it's going to spoil
    (Probably forget)
This fun, it feels like toil
    (To remember it, probably forget)
Would start to let us finish it
    (Remember it, probably forget)
My heart wants just to know that it exists
    (Remember it)
Would start to let us finish it

My heart, my heart, my heart, my heart, my heart

If I'm dreaming you and you're dreaming me
Then why don't we choose a different story
If I'm dreaming you and you're dreaming me
    Then why don't we choose
If I'm dreaming you, then you're dreaming me
So why don't we choose a different story
    (Why - if - this - dream - is - to - die)
If i'm dreaming you, then you're dreaming me
    (Why - if - this - dream)
    Then why

    I do not understand
    If time is smooth

I may want you, but you don't want me
So why wouldn't it be better to leave

I may want you, but you don't want me
    (Points to a star)
So why wouldn't it be better to leave

(Points to a star, if every tree)
My heart wants just to know
    (Points to a star)
