You gotta be honest
You gotta be guarded
You sure aren't gonna say

Right on the inside
That is the hardest
The hardest game to play

You sorted it all out
And managed to slip through
The night into the day

Life and a soul
Do you ever get lonely?
I'm gonna take you on

Found a way to understand the things I'm learning
Found a way to understand the time you're burning
Found a way to understand the things I'm learning
Found a way to understand the time you're burning

Gotta be honest
You gotta be guarded
You sure aren't gonna say

Right on the inside
That is the hardest
The hardest game to play

Life and a soul
Do you ever get lonely?
I'm gonna take you on

Found a way to understand the things I'm learning
Found a way to understand the time you're burning
Found a way to understand the things I'm learning
Found a way to understand the time you're burning

I'm gonna take you on

Gotta be honest
You gotta be guarded
You sure aren't gonna say

Right on the inside
That is the hardest
The hardest game to play

    My Interpretation

I feel like this song is being sung from the perspective of someone who has gone through a lot of hard times but has learned a lot and made a sort of peace with life in all it's good and bad forms. They are singing to someone who they recognize as being a lot like them before they were able to learn their lessons and grow from them, so the singer is helping this vulnerable person by sharing what they learned in a similar situation.

"You gotta be honest, You gotta be guarded, You sure aren't gonna say" The singer is saying, "I've been there; you want to be honest in everything you do so badly, but you're still vulnerable and feel like you need to be guarded."

"Right on the inside, That is the hardest, The hardest game to play

You sorted it all out And managed to slip through The night into the day" Again the singer is expressing hoe s/he relates to the person being sung to/about. "It's a hard game to play be unsure of everything and to feel like you're just slipping by in life."

"Life and a soul Do you ever get lonely? I'm gonna take you on" This is the singer having a "deep" conversation with the person about life and how being lonely sucks, but they want to help them with their friendship if they can.

"(I) Found a way to understand the things I'm learning (I) Found a way to understand the time you're burning" The singer says s/he understands, but they found a way out through understanding, and believe the person being sung to/about can as well.

    My Interpretation

I get the feeling that it's about overcoming an addiction or a bad habit. Like most people who have gone through withdrawals know, you spend a lot of time wondering how you're going to make it through to the next day. Also, something I personally do is repeat the same phrases over and over again to myself.....Like, "If you can make it another minute, you can do another hour." And being honest with yourself is the most important part, because if you tell yourself that you don't have a problem that needs to be fixed, you won't fix it. I get the sense that a lot of their song lyrics are about addiction.

Seems like in any relationship (not necessarily romantic) "you gotta be honest" if you want the other person to know how you're feeling, but "you gotta be guarded" if you don't want to get screwed over, taken advantage of, or get hurt.... Is this a lack of trust, or a fear of being betrayed...

I personally think this song is about feelings of guilt, denial and turmoil for caring about someone who society thinks you should not care about based off all the unwritten rules of love.

Light Up The Sky
Van Halen
The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

Cajun Girl
Little Feat
Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

I Can't Go To Sleep
Wu-Tang Clan
This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

Punchline
