You mean that much to me
And it's hard to show
Gets hectic inside of me
When you go
Can I confess these things
To you
I don't know
Embedded in my chest
And it
Hurts to hold

I couldn't spill my heart
My eyes gleam looking in from the dark
I walk out in stormy weather
Hold my words, keep us together
Steady walking but bound to trip
Should release but just tighten my grip

Night time sympathize
I've been working on white lies
So I'll tell the truth
I'll give it up to you
And when the day comes
It will have all been fun
We'll talk about it soon

And I couldn't spill my heart
My eyes gleam
Looking in from the dark
And I walk out in stormy weather
Hope my words keep us together
Steady walking but bound to trip
Should release but just tighten my grip

Night time sympathize
I've been working on white lies
So I'll tell the truth
I'll give it up to you
And when the day comes
It will have all been fun
We'll talk about it soon

I think oceaneyes is probably pretty spot on, but there's another option I'd like to explore. One of the recurring themes of this album seems to be about a broken relationship and this song could possibly fall into that as well.

I think the girl is speaking about a relationship that she wants to walk away from or thinks needs to end, but she cares deeply for the other person and is having difficulty calling it quits. Here's an excruciatingly literal interpretation:

Breaking up with someone you care about can really tear you up inside. Will she be able to tell him the truth? She doesn't want to hurt them, so she's been telling "white lies" (maybe, "It'll be okay"?) to protect them. She walks away from a fight ("stormy weather") to stop herself from saying things she does(n't) mean, but knows that eventually she won't be able to keep up this act. She knows that she needs to let him go. When she is alone with her thoughts at night, she understands what she is doing is hurting them and realizes that she needs to tell the truth. And the last two lines could be her trying to convince herself that one day she'll look back on it as a good time.

This is me right now. :(

Basically, I love my boyfriend, but we're both bad at showing it + equally stubborn and commitment phobes. So we basically play a cat and mouse game. Where, when he starts being nice and sweet and trying to show affection, I push him away, and the same vice versa. Also we live together, and we're always together, so we're really tired of each other. We keep becoming more and more distant every day. We don't even talk anymore, really. I feel extremely lonely although I'm always with him. And we both kinda know in the back of our heads that this is about to end, and we're falling out of love with each other. I know we should just end it now, but I want so desperately for things to go back to how they used to be, that I don't say anything. Or tell him how much it hurts that I know he isn't in love with me anymore and that we're both growing apart. Cos we don't wanna admit or hear that this is over. And we are so accustomed to each other, that we can't let it go. But one of these days, in the near future, I know it's inevitable, we'll talk about it and finally release each other. But until then I'm holding on as long as possible and just keeping my mouth shut.

It sounds sexual in some parts, but if you pay attention it REALLY isn't. It's about a girl being good friends with a guy she likes but she's withholding that from him & lying about it because she knows that if she were to tell him the friendship would be ruined. She knows one day she'll tell him, but their friendship will be over. She knows she should let him go but she can't lose him. Not wanting to lose him is basically the whole theme of this.

    1. Can I confess these things to you? Well I don't know.
    2. I couldn't spill my heart
    3. Hold my words, keep us together.
    4. Should release but just tighten my grip.
    5. I've been working on white lies.
    6. I'll give it up to you, and when the day come It will have all been fun.
    7. We'll talk about it soon.

i agree with twclark76 with some of the stuff.

I think this is about 2 people in a relationship who both aren't very good at showing affection. She wants to tell him how much he means to her but she can't because she fears that he will think she's clingy and she's scared it will get awkward. Then they have a fight which is evident through the line..'walk out on stormy weather' but she doesn't want to this relationship to end so she doesn't say a word because she's scared it'll tear her relationship apart. The ending concludes with:

'Night time Sympathize I've been working on White lies So I'll tell the truth I'll give it up to you And when the day come It will have all been fun We'll talk about it soon'

which to me, say that every night, she looks back and thinks about her relationship and thinks that it might not work out but she still likes him. She doesn't say she loves him or shows affection but one day she'll have the courage to show him how much she loves him and it will be fun and they'll talk about their feelings together.

    That's just one interpretation..

    here's another one..

there's two bestfriends and one of them falls for the other person but doesn't want to ruin their friendship.

You mean that much to me And it's hard to show (hard to show affection)

Gets hectic inside of me When you go (when the other person(the bestfriend) is in another relationship it, it gets hetic inside of the other person who has fallen for the bestfriend)

Can I confess these things To you Well I don't know Embedded in my chest And it Hurts to hold (doesn't know how to tell the bestfriend, because he's/she's scared that he/she doesn't feel the same way)

I couldn't spill my heart My eyes gleam looking in from the dark I walk out in stormy weather Hold my words, keep us together Steady walking but bound to trip Should release but just tighten my grip (doesn't want show affection and tell the other person how he/she feels because they're scared it's going to cause a fight 'walk out on stormy weather.. hold my words, keep us together' he/she tries to forget about the bestfriend but he/she still can't get the bestfriend off his/her mind)

Night time Sympathize I've been working on White lies So I'll tell the truth I'll give it up to you And when the day come It will have all been fun We'll talk about it soon
(white lies, as in little lies.. every time the bestfriend asks who he/she likes he/she always lies and tells them..oh no one because he/she is scared to see the bestfriend's reaction.. but one day, he/she will tell them how he/she feels about the bestfriend and when he/she has the courage..they'll be able to talk about how they feel about each other)

sorry, if it was confusing.. haha but we all have our own interpretation :)

p.s i love this song!! and i'm in love with ollie's voice!!!

I think some of the options people have posted are all vialble interpretations of the song, no doubt. That is the beauty of music, that a song can mean something different to each individual and that individual can relate it to their own life in one way or another. To me, this song is about a person in a relationship with someone she truly, truly cares about, deeply. However, she's screwed up...made some mistakes, I believe she is referring to her breaking the trust in the relationship. She knows she should confess and tell the other person everything she has done, but she also knows that this will deeply hurt that person and that the relationship will be over.

You mean that much to me And it's hard to show (She truly loves this person, event though she isnt' the best at showing the person her true feelings through her actiosn)

Gets hectic inside of me When you go Can I confess these things To you Well I don't know Embedded in my chest And it Hurts to hold (When he is gone she strays from her relationship, like she cant' help it in a way, even though she knows it's wrong. Can she confess these things, she doesn't know yet....she's holding all these things in and it's starting to become hard to live with...but she feels she has no choice at this point, she doesn't know how to confide in him.

I couldn't spill my heart My eyes gleam looking in from the dark I walk out in stormy weather Hold my words, keep us together Steady walking but bound to trip Should release but just tighten my grip (She doesn't think she can bring herself to tell him what she has done and that's it's over..holding her words, or keeping it to herself in other words, is keeping the relationship together at this point...Steady walking but bound to trip means that right now things are fine, but he will eventually find out and the relationship will crumble (bound to trip)...but for right now it's fine..until he finds out. She should go ahead and tell him but she holds on even harder and keeps lying to hold on to the relationship as long as she can.

    Just my inerpretation.

    Song Meaning

I think this song is about a prostitute who falls in love, but she says when the day comes to quit the passion she's developed for her career they can talk about the relationship: she needs to be independent for now

From the first stanza, she's not with him, but he wants to be with her. He has much to tell her (all his lies) and he hopes that when they are finally together they will talk and all will be fine. Until they are together he hopes that she hangs on to the words he may have said to her...that she'll be there when he's able to step out of the storm.

such a beautiful, wistful, romantic song. definitely think it's about someone in a relationship who realizes they have fallen in love with the other person, but they're desperately afraid to admit it. at the same time, they know they can't hold it in forever, and it actually hurts to hold it in:

You mean that much to me And it's hard to show Gets hectic inside of me When you go Can I confess these things To you Well I don't know Embedded in my chest And it Hurts to hold

They want so badly to confess their feelings to their lover but something, fear, is holding them back:

I couldn't spill my heart My eyes gleam looking in from the dark I walk out in stormy weather Hold my words, keep us together Steady walking but bound to trip Should release but just tighten my grip

They know that it's only a matter of time before the truth comes out, they're tired of lying, they look forward to the moment when they can stop telling "white lies" and hiding their true feelings, and truly let the other person in, they resolve to tell what they really feel soon:

Night time Sympathize I've been working on White lies So I'll tell the truth I'll give it up to you And when the day come It will have all been fun We'll talk about it soon

@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
