"Hey Soul Sister" as written by and Pat Monahan....
Hey, hey, hey

Your lipstick stains on the front lobe of my left side brains
I knew I wouldn't forget you, and so I let you go and blow my mind
Your sweet moonbeam, the smell of you in every single dream, I dream
I knew when we collided, you're the one I have decided who's one of my kind

[Chorus]
Hey soul sister, ain't that Mr. Mister on the radio, stereo,
The way you move ain't fair, you know!
Hey soul sister, I don't want to miss a single thing you do, tonight

Hey, hey, hey

Just in time, I'm so glad you have a one-track mind like me
You gave my life direction, a game show love connection we can't deny
I'm so obsessed, my heart is bound to beat right out of my untrimmed chest
I believe in you, like a virgin, you're Madonna
And I'm always gonna wanna blow your mind

[Chorus]

Well you can cut a rug, watching you's the only drug I need
So gangsta, I'm so thug, you're the only one I'm dreaming of
You see, I can be myself now finally, in fact there's nothing I can't be
I want the world to see you'll be, with me

[Chorus]

Hey soul sister, I don't want to miss a single thing you do,
Tonight
Hey, hey, hey
Tonight
Hey, hey, hey
Tonight

General CommentSeems to have a lot of 80's pop culture references: Soulsister (an 80's group who had a couple songs out), Madonna's "Like a Virgin", Mr. Mister, maybe even Huey Lewis's "I want a new drug" ("Watching you's the only drug I need"... maybe?), Love Connection (the game show), New Kids on the Block's "Didn't I Blow Your Mind" ("I'm always gonna want to blow your mind")

Maybe I'm reading too much into this song!!

My InterpretationI think it's just about him finding a kindred spirit, a girl who's just like him. And he likes her.

My InterpretationSoul Sister = is a soul mate if you're a male.

This song is about being in love with your best friend, which is common these days to say that a best friend is a soul mate. In the lyrics he is outlining the reason why he is in love with his soul mate, obviously of the opposite sex too. :)

My InterpretationI realize my interpretation is probably somewhat biased towards true love.

    Verse 1
At first the writer seems to make an ironic comparison about suicide. The level of depression one needs to commit suicide could be the exact opposite of the glee he feels. (I would assume the lipstick was red.)
I wonder if "moonbeam" is a perfume.
The writer feels like he's found love at its first sight; his soul mate.

The chorus seems to allude to a one night thing, but I don't know that the rest of the song is in tune with that idea.

The second verse emphasizes how much she gets him (understands him) and how enamored he is with her. The chest hair starts a very sensual part of the song. The Madonna line is obviously a reference to her song, "Like a Virgin." However, I do think there might be a bit of heavily hidden meaning here- but i'll keep that to myself.

I don't think this song is about a one night stand. The writer talks about his dreams about her.

I think he wants to remember this night, every piece of the night.

General Commentthis song is about finding that girl that you are so comfortable with. a quirky, fun-loving, happy-go-lucky girl who makes him feel like he can be himself around. he's totally in love with her.

I think this song is basically about this guy who is really really down. Like, close to suicide. His life is crashing down, and he's relying on things he shouldn't have to. But then he meets this girl that totally changes his mind.

'And so I went and let you blow my mind.'
Instead of taking a blow in the head, he would rather let her blow his mind.
    'You gave my life direction'
She gave him a reason to live.
'Watching you's the only drug I need'
He was relying on drugs and alchohal, but with this girl, he needs nothing.

This probably didn't make much sense, but whatever. ;)

General Commenti think it's about a guy realizing he's falling for a girl. He likes her and the unique things about her. It leaves a mark. And he likes it. He's letting her blow his mind.

"The smell of you in every single dream I dream"

    "I knew I wouldn't forget you,
And so I went and let you blow my mind"

General CommentFrom what I've noticed in the lyrics and then watching that music video it's obvious that it's about meeting your other half that completes you. I don't mean soul mate, I mean twin flame. The person that not only thinks on the exact same level as you about everything, but the moment you met, your entire world suddenly changes. They are the mirror image mentally. I've noticed how it's also stating that this is some girl he finally met that makes him feel at home inside for once in his life. Twin flames will do that to someone.

Anyway, I like to point out a section of the lyrics:

I believe in you, "Like a Virgin," you're Madonna, And I'm always gonna want to blow your mind.
(meaning madonna wasn't a virgin and in her song "like a virgin", it's stating how she was with this guy who not only wowed her, but touched her heart deeply emotionally, mentally, and sexually. There is the chorus of that song that makes me aware of why it was used in this song by Train: "I was beat, incomplete. I'd been had, I was sad and blue. But you made me feel, yeah, you made me feel shiny and new.")

Anyway, something personal stuck out from the lyrics that reflects my own experience:

"Just in time, I'm so glad you have a one track mind like me." - there is a guy whom for some reason I've gotten to know and we are on the same page so often, it recently ended, but we stayed friends. The thing is that before we really gotten to know one another, it was interesting. Then a time went on, we both realized that we're on the same mind track about so many things, that's spooky.

"You gave my life direction, a game show love connection, we can't deny-i-i-i." - haha reminds me of the guessing games i made him play and the fun surprises I pulled out on him, like making him a mix cd or inspiring him with thoughts of wisdom at random moments. Plus the way that we both get into games and what not, reflects the silliness like a game show when we play pool or something like darts...

"I'm so obsessed, My heart is bound to beat right out my untrimmed chest" - this is exactly how he felt the night he saw me. I was told by someone later on that he was so nervous that when he tried to come over to talk to me, that he felt his heart beat so hard that he thought it was going to pound out of his chest if he tried to come up to me. I was shocked, but in awe of how nervous he was to talk to me.

"The way you can cut a rug, watching you's the only drug I need." - then also from the nigh we met, I was constantly dancing for hours, and he was hooked just watching me move and groove. I noticed him staring for hours before he made a real move, but he just stared in awe like he was getting a high from watching me dance.
