In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.
Thought it was dead and buried
Then it woke you up last night
You sounded so damn worried
You've been tossing, turning, both ends burning
I wanna put your mind at ease again
(Make everything alright)
I know it's getting underneath your skin
I've tried to tell you now
Don't look over your shoulder
'Cause that's just the ghost of me
You're seeing in your dreams
Wait, there's no rhyme or reason
Sometimes there's no meaning
In the visions when you're sleepin'
Don't wake up and believe them
You're looking at the ghost of me
You're looking at the ghost of me
With your imagination and emotions running wild
Fueling my frustrations like a fire burning, clock keeps turning
And I, I know it's getting underneath your skin
I've tried to tell you now
Don't look over your shoulder
'Cause that's just the ghost of me
You're seeing in your dreams
Wait, there's no rhyme or reason
Sometimes there's no meaning
In the visions when you're sleepin'
Don't wake up and believe them
You're looking at the ghost of me
Whoa
Yeah, you're looking at the ghost of me
Yeah, you're looking at the ghost of me
Don't look over your shoulder
'Cause that's just the ghost of me
You're seein'
Wait, there's no rhyme or reason
Sometimes there's no meaning
In the visions when you're sleepin'
Don't wake up and believe them
Visions when you're sleepin'

@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday".
I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.
Punchline
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran sings about missing his former partner and learning important life lessons in the process on “Punchline.” This track tells a story of battling to get rid of emotions for a former lover, whom he now realized might not have loved him the same way. He’s now caught between accepting that fact and learning life lessons from it and going back to beg her for another chance.

There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
Plastic Bag
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it.
“I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
Fantastic song! I love it! One of my favorites on the album. Here's my interpretation of what it means.

I've been in several of these relationships, and I've been on both sides. I've learned it's always best just to move on, to find someone that won't hurt you, who will be there with you, and who will love you unconditionally with all their heart.

Chris, I think your interpretation is spot on. I see it exactly your way as well. Good stuff.
I love this song! I thought it was great to see it used on a CSI Miami promo. The chorus has a special meaning to me- I had a relationship with a woman for 5 years and she moved back to her home state. The last day I saw her, on my way home, this song came on. I was sitting at a red light and thought wow, this so fits!
I was under the impression that this song was about something that he did. Maybe cheating. He thought the matter had been laid to rest, but it turns out that its still on her mind. And he wants to assure her that its not gonna happen again. And she thinks its happening, but he tells her its just her imagination. And her seeing him betraying her in her dreams is her only seeing the ghost of who he was, because that person is dead and gone.
That's just always where my mind goes when I listen to the song.
I can see it from your point of view as well. I guess the interpretation depends on where your heart and mind are at the time.
Totally agree. That was my first impression too.
When I first heard this song, I immediately thought of this woman who was having nightmares about a troubled past; maybethe way her husband used to be. He comforts her and tells her that he's changed; reminds her of who he is now.
I can see it from the other point of view as well though, the less literal interpretation of it - a woman pining over a relationship that is finished.
Awesome song, I love it. :)
i know my way's sounds totally different than everyone elses but, i think this song is about a girl who loves a man and she worries over every little thing and if you take the "ghost" part literally it's her picturing him dead or in an accident. i also think the song is like the guy comforting her, telling her that the "ghosts" are just her being paranoid.
The first lines just reminds me of my grandma. She is always worring
Whenever I listen to this song, I imagine he's singing to an ex-girlfriend.
When he says 'Your looking at the ghost of me', to me he's saying that he's already gone, that she's seeing the past. That's just what I think of.
Maybe it means that an ex wants to get back with him, but loves who he was, not who he is today. So she would be looking at the "ghost of him"-who he was previously.
