So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.

That’s my plan. You see this is me and my best friend of 7 years song. Currently were on opposite sides of the globe we had tried a long distance relationship which ended in a hudge fight. After which we didn’t talk for a whole 3 months (at least weekly before then). She was the one that re-initiated talking, and after a few weeks I gave her a call to say how messed up I was. She said she was messed up to. My plan is to go back home and remind her why I am important to her.<br /> <br /> we hav both walked, said the wrong thing, Said we werent meant to be and burns like an iorn in both our heads. Girlfriend of 3 years broke up with me a month ago, still love her like crazy because she's the only one that understood me. Not saying our relationship was perfect at all. We are both busy with school and me especially coming from a strict family I needed good grades. I figured the hardships we went through now i could always provide for her a good life. She told me that she was moving on and that she didn't love me anymore..but i still love her..and always will...maybe it doesn't matter what road it takes as long in the end she's in my arms. I don't know if she still loves me or if she ever will again. All i know is that she was perfect in my eyes and I want her back so much. If i had one more chance i'd never let her go.
dude that sucks man. I am in a similar situation with my ex- we went to HS together but decided to go to different schools, and we had to split up. but even after 6 months I still wonder if she was it. but only time will tell.
