"Playing Possum" as written by Hod David and Maxwell Musze....
Come back, from the dead
You left my, my heart here
Say what you will and won't forget
Express disappointment, speak your regrets, yeah
Oh baby call out my name, I'll be where you are
I'll be very still, step down to my heart

Amend this broken
If only you'd wake up from your constant possum playing
If only you'd wake up

I'm begging you sugar, have some leniency
Call the president and ask him, baby, to pardon me
And bring you back to me
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Whoo, whoo, whoo, whoo

And mend this broken
If only you'd quit this nonsense of you possum playing
If only you'd wake up, would you wake up, would you wake up baby, yeah

Yeah, yea
Yeah, yea
Yeah, yea
Heh, heh, ho
Whoa whoo
Ah whoo
Whooo, whoo, whoo
Whoo, whoo, whoo

My InterpretationI think this is one of the nicest songs on Maxwell's newest album. To me, it highlights his artistry not just his ability to perform. The vocals are natural and easy, the instrumental components have a purity and simplicity that I immediately loved. Seeing him perform it live was incredible especially since the entire band was really gifted even though his vocals were a bit strained. You can feel the yearning, the raw desire for her to just open up and share what she's feeling whether it's good or bad. You know the times when one of you would rather risk starting World War 3 than letting such a big issue go. One of those relationships where you really want to be with that person, but something happens and you know it's the beginning of the end. The other person keeps at it but you just let it ride. You don't discuss it and really your mind is made up that it's over between you. The poor guy never gets to plead his case or express how he really feels. It's not even a real break up because there's no discussion and you start to distance yourself until he stops calling.
