"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
This time, next year
Things are gonna change
Put our distances aside
You're already so far away
And we can find out
What's really wrong with you
Take your time now
And find something new 'cause it's over
I'm over you, it's time for
Action, action, believe me, believe your eyes
Your lies have got you
Everything you wanted
Like your name in lights
Step back, you're a distraction
But tonight, you've got to figure this one
Out on your own
'Cause it's time for action, action
Action, action
All this time spent here
I never thought I'd see this day
If I swallowed all my pride
Could I convince you to stay?
And we can find out
What's really wrong with you
Take your time now
And find something new 'cause it's over
And I'm over you
I know that we'll meet again
You'll have a new face and new friends
If I can't read you
Today we'll have nothing left to say
And we can find out
What's really wrong with you
Take your time now
And find something new 'cause it's over
It's time for action, action, believe me, believe your eyes
Your lies have got you
Everything you wanted
Like your name in lights
Step back, you're a distraction
But tonight, you've got to figure this one
