"Monkey Brains" as written by Jeremy Taggart, Duncan Coutts, Steve Mazur and Raine Maida....
Makin' plans for your escape
Get between all the ricochets
Assume positions in the sky
Fly away with the butterflies
Rest your head in Pacific grove
Lose yourself down in Mexico
Wanna taste of the monkey brains
Take a bite man don't be shy

They're comin' after you
They're comin' after you
It's all you can do
They're comin' after you

Got your file and your DNA
Membership in the NRA
On the list with the FBI
Yearbook pics from the junior high
Camouflage in your orange and black
Soar above all the ground attacks
Safe and sound on this coastal plane
Celebrate with the cheap champagne

Generations trying to find a home
A thousand miles away from what they know
It's time to go

General Comment"The monarch butterfly is a fascinating insect. I remember Ontario summers bursting with monarchs.

I was amazed to realize that it takes four generations of monarchs to migrate to a warmer climate and then return back for summer. Four generations!!! That goes beyond commitment. Monkey Brains is an ode to the monarch butterfly and it's incredible dedication."

    - Raine Maida

Some of the lyrics don't seem to go along with this (even metaphorically), but it's still a cool little backstory.

General CommentAwesome song and I just hope it's true about the monarch butterflies, because it fits and I find the idea so cool!

Definitely the best song on the album for me, I like rock, energetic, quirky.

Even after 3 albums I still find it hard to get my head around OLPs new sound. This album is slowly growing on me. Going further than the softer tone of the music and back into the lyric meanings helps.

General CommentWow...yeah best not to ever read OLP's interpretations of their songs! I was thinking it was returning to the late-nineties sound and lyrics from their third and fourth album, a little paranoid, a little alien, a little political. It also reminds me of Black 'big green moneky, everyone's a junkie'!

General CommentIn Pacific Grove, California, it is misdemeanor to kill a butterfly, I believe.
Perhaps that is why the monarch can 'rest its head' there.

General CommentThe song seems to me to be about armies.

The song is basically a temptation to people to take a bite of the monkey brains- to sign up, there's no need to double think it (don't be shy)

Then while on the field, realizing it wasn't all it was cracked up to be. You need to survive the attacks so you don't die (resting your head and losing yourself in the pacific grove/mexico).

They're coming after you is a double edge meaning telling you they want you to sign up but also saying the other country's army is after you as well.

The mentions of the DNA, NRA, FBI, yearbook photos is statements basically saying they'll find you if you try to run. They've got records of you everywhere and while you can try to run- you can't hide.

It also mentions how you are safe in the plane, above ground attack (the battlefield).

The generations trying to come back home is also metaphoric in the sense that soldiers for generations have not been able to come back home- they have gotten lost, killed in the war... They never had a chance to come back home and are buried far away from everything they have known.
