confetti floats away like dead leaves in the wagon's wake
there were parties here in my honor til you sent me away
and now silver moons belong to you
i'm passing the baton from the old mare to the fawn
it was out of line but it was fun, didn't you love the part right before the dawn?
and now silver moons belong to you
i'm off to the ballet and to practice all these ancient ways
tell the new kids where i hid the wine, tell their fathers that i'm on my way, and say:

maybe these days are over, over now
maybe these days are over, over now
and i loved it better than anyone else you know
and i believe in growing old with grace
i believe she only loved my face
i believe i acted like a child
making faces at acquired tastes
and now silver moons belong to you

and silver moons belong to you
i'm off to the ballet and to practice all these ancient ways
tell the new kids where i hid the wine, tell their fathers that i'm on my way, and say:

maybe these days are over, over now
i think maybe these days are over, over now
i believe in growing old with grace
i believe she only loved my face
and i think maybe these days are over, over now

gone are the days bonfires make me think of you
looks like the prophecy came true
you are a fallen tree, he is a fallen tree
how old are you, no, how old are you?

under all the folds of your dresses that you wear
there's an ocean and a tide and a riot in the square
over are the days that the congas made your hair
sway around to the cadence of your hey ho hey ho cheer

under all the folds of the dresses that you wear
sway around to the cadence of your voice when you sang there

General Commenti could use a bit of help on the last stanza thing, particularly the second and third lines.

General Comment"a passing of the tongue from the old mirror to the phone" = "a passing of a ton from the old mare to the fawn"

"gone are the day spawn, fires make me think of you" = "gone are the days bonfires make me think of you"

"there's an ocean and a tide and a lion in the square" = "there's an ocean and a tide and a riot in the square"

    "comb has" = "compass"

Song MeaningMy interpretation of this song's lyrics is that it's about growing old and losing purpose in one's own life and utility in other people's lives. It's a sad realization that one is going to inevitably face the loss and changes that come with it. Really uplifting stuff...

General CommentThe only correction I would make is "Under all the folds of your dresses that you wear" = "Under all the folds of the dresses that you wear"

General CommentAlso, sorry for the double post, it is "congas," not "compass" in "..over are the days that the congas made your hair sway around..."

General CommentThe theme of this song, in combination with the reference to the silver moon, reminds me of Philip Larkin's poem "Sad Steps". Here's a link:

General CommentPart of me might just be stretching this song to connect with me but it really resonates with me and how feel about life right now. I'm leaving high school and just ended a relationship with my highschool girlfriend and am ready to grow old and continue making mistakes in order to learn how to live better. I've made so many already but they've really made me much stronger and smarter. Life must move on and you have to let go of certain things and not cling to pasts which lose their relevance to you. Move on towards a future that is truly fitting for you and make decisions based on that.

There are certain lines in this song that definitely make me feel like he's talking about ending relationships as well. Parties in my honor until you sent me away, especially. She only loved my face because our relationship was not quite real, we are not compatible and he's going to keep searching, growing old with grace.
However, I do not know what silver moons are supposed to represent.

Song MeaningClear from the first verse he is talking about leaving a group of friends who we was close with, now the parties have ended for him, 'confetti floats away'. 'Parties in my honour' are presumably his leaving parties. He's 'passing the baton' on to the new members of the crowd because he's moving on. The Silver moons symbolise the late nights they had together. They used to belong to him but now he won't be with them any more they belong to the rest of them. "tell their fathers that i'm on my way" seems to mean he feels he's leaving his childhood or adolescent period behind him and becoming a man.

I'm finding the last verse a little more difficult to understand
