We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

My interpretation of this song's lyrics is that it's about growing old and losing purpose in one's own life and utility in other people's lives. It's a sad realization that one is going to inevitably face the loss and changes that come with it. Really uplifting stuff...

Part of me might just be stretching this song to connect with me but it really resonates with me and how feel about life right now. I'm leaving high school and just ended a relationship with my highschool girlfriend and am ready to grow old and continue making mistakes in order to learn how to live better. I've made so many already but they've really made me much stronger and smarter. Life must move on and you have to let go of certain things and not cling to pasts which lose their relevance to you. Move on towards a future that is truly fitting for you and make decisions based on that.
There are certain lines in this song that definitely make me feel like he's talking about ending relationships as well. Parties in my honor until you sent me away, especially. She only loved my face because our relationship was not quite real, we are not compatible and he's going to keep searching, growing old with grace. However, I do not know what silver moons are supposed to represent.
Clear from the first verse he is talking about leaving a group of friends who we was close with, now the parties have ended for him, 'confetti floats away'. 'Parties in my honour' are presumably his leaving parties. He's 'passing the baton' on to the new members of the crowd because he's moving on. The Silver moons symbolise the late nights they had together. They used to belong to him but now he won't be with them any more they belong to the rest of them. "tell their fathers that i'm on my way" seems to mean he feels he's leaving his childhood or adolescent period behind him and becoming a man.
I'm finding the last verse a little more difficult to understand
I think it's actually my least favorite part of the lyrics. It feels like he's reminissing on what he had. Over are the days of the woman he loved and her joy. There's so much with her that's not with him anymore. "When you sang there" is when they were in a relationship and she was "singing" to him.<br /> For such a triumphant song of moving on with one's life it's a little contradictory, for me at least, to end with a verse lamenting about what he used to have.
I think it's just a general statement about reaching the point in life when the party stops and responsibility sets in, specifically leaving college, but possibly that may just be symbolic references.<br /> <br /> The last verse is obviously a bit more of a personal reflection on his partner of that time. I think that the ocean, tide and riot in the square are showing that she represents his youth to him, but still with the theme that it's all over.<br /> <br /> That's just my take on it. Either way, amazing song.
