"'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it."

Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it.
“I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
I met Nate from the band last night and he said that this is his favorite song to play live from Aim & Ignite. :) I definitely agree with @xbaba35x about the 2nd verse- how the lines "Then he swears he's gotta take this call/ Man, I get scared he's gonna leave us too soon" is about Jack and Steel Train.
My favorite song from my favorite record this year.
I think the song is about a night out with a group of friends and Nate starts to realize that they're all moving in different directions. And he's tired of the busy nightlife and the dangers involved. He talks about getting into a fight but realizes it's something he couldn't do because he loves where his life is leading him and he thinks he is going to live forever.
The gospel choir=money in a song that can get by on the lyrics alone.
This is a really good song!
I think the verse with the sheep is about his band now and how he feels it's not as solid as he'd like. But I'm only guessing. It just sounds like it because there's three of them, and he "takes their tales" and is ready to write the lyrics and sing. And Jack maybe isn't able to fully commit because of Steel Train and such, so he has to take other calls, other roles. just a thought.

I love the Rebel Without a Cause reference (rich white kids fighting, the outsider kid wanting to take him on, the immortal young love mentality). More than that, I love how he finishes the Dean reference with the lyrics about his life and death. Hell, the song's about living life while young, Dean HAD to be included.
I always think about the first Assassin’s Creed book where Ezio goes out and fights the rich kids and then takes the money for alcohol and the hospital bills
