"No Surprise" as written by Christopher A. Daughtry, Eric Dill, Chad Robert Kroeger and Rune Westberg....
I've practiced this for hours, gone round and round
And now I think that I've got it all down
And as I say it louder, I love how it sounds
'Cause I'm not taking the easy way out
Not wrappin' this in ribbons
Shouldn't have to give a reason why

It's no surprise I won't be here tomorrow
I can't believe that I stayed till today
Yeah you and I will be a tough act to follow
But I know in time we'll find this was no surprise

It came out like a river once I let it out
When I thought that I wouldn't know how
Held onto it forever, just pushing it down
Felt so good to let go of it now
Not wrapping this in ribbons
Shouldn't have to give a reason why

It's no surprise I won't be here tomorrow
I can't believe that I stayed till today
There's nothing here in this heart left to borrow
There's nothing here in this soul left to say

Don't be surprised when we hate this tomorrow
God knows we tried to find an easier way
Yeah you and I will be a tough act to follow
But I know in time we'll find this was no surprise

Our favorite place we used to go
The warm embrace that no one knows
The loving look that's left your eyes
That's why this comes as no, as no surprise

If I could see the future and how this plays out
I bet it's better than where we are now
But after going through this
It's easier to see the reason why

It's no surprise I won't be here tomorrow
I can't believe that I stayed till today (stayed till today)
Yeah you and I will be a tough act to follow
But I know in time we'll find this was no surprise

The kiss goodnight, it comes with me
Both wright and wrong, our memories
The whispering before we sleep,
Just one more thing that you can't keep

Our favorite place we used to go
The warm embrace that no one knows
The loving look that's left your eyes
But I know in time we'll find this was no surprise

My InterpretationThis song is obviously about a dying relationship. The singer is ready to call it quits and has rehearsed his last words many times. He's ready to get out of the relationship, because its doing nothing but hurting him. It sounds like the girl does not love him as she once did, and he can't take it anymore. Hes telling her that its no surprise the relationship is ending, they both knew it was coming.

My InterpretationI love this song, it sort of makes me feel upset though.

I agree with basically everyone else, it's about a couple that started out with the most perfect relationship, there didn't seem to be any faults, but over time, it burned out.

The line 'The loving look that's left your eyes'
I hate when relationships fuzz out :( we've all had one though.

General CommentI think as much as the radio station overplay Daughtry, No Surprise is definitely the one that will NEVER get old. It's definitely about a relationship where two people love each other and had an amazing period of time together, but at times just did not get along and wanted to get out.

"It's no surprise I won't be here tomorrow
I can't believe that I stayed till today
There's nothing here in this heart left to borrow
There's nothing here in this soul left to say"

It is just too late, all the bad things about their relationship have just built up and he can't take it anymore.

"Don't be surprised when we hate this tomorrow
God knows we tried to find an easier way
Yeah you and I will be a tough act to follow
But I know in time we'll find this was no surprise"

Tomorrow after it has sunk in, they will hate it, because of how much love they had in their relationship. God knows that they have tried everythign to work out their relationship, but they just need to be apart because of all the tension. They had so much love for eachother, they'll be "a tough act to follow".

"Our favorite place we used to go
The warm embrace that no one knows
The loving look that's left your eyes
That's why this comes as no, as no surprise"

Nobody ever understood their relationship or their love. They had their own special jokes, places, comforts, and love. Over time it is taken for granted and just...leaves. Which is the worst. But that's why it's no surprise.

Reminds me of my boyfriend and I.

MemoryMy memory of when this song came out was I was trying to catch my wife cheating on me or being in an affair so I installed a keystroke logger on her PC. Yeah you have to be sneaky to catch sneaky people and among other things this was a song she felt was quite endearing and seemed that the words so romantically applied to her and her Romeo at the time so she used this as her basis of her plans. How romantic huh? LOL. Soooooo folks it can be emblematic of a relationship that's gone stale but remember most relationships have their stale moments as well as their peaks and valleys. I agree with the interpretations of most on here but let's just say it doesn't hold the same place of beauty to me for obvious reasons. I don't think she thinks the song is quite as sweet and romantic and sad today.

General CommentI agree with ttmmll1, its about a dying relationship. He wants to end it, but he can't find a big reason why he wants to end it. Its either because of a bunch of little things she has done, or he just wants to end it. he knows she will be angry and upset with why he does it but he doesn't care he has a right "'Cause I'm not taking the easy way out, Not wrapping this in ribbons, Shouldn't have to give a reason why." And that they had been so close, and had something so good, "God knows we tried to find an easier way, Yeah you and I will be a tough act to follow" "Our favorite place we used to go The warm embrace that no one knows The loving look that's left your eyes" He knows its tough, but he knows tht it is for the best, even is she can't see it right now. "But I know in time we'll find this was no surprise, But after going through this, it's easier to see the reason why"

General CommentBIG DAUGHTRY FAN!! BY FAR HIS BEST SONG YET!! MY FAVORTIE!! it's definitely a/b a relationship/marriage. When I heard this for the 1st time on American Idol I had to immediately download it. The "u & I will be a tough act to follow" & "don't be surprised I won't be here tomorrow-can't believe that I stayed til today" lines are really hit home for me.

General Commenti agree with what others say above. its about a dying relationship. "The loving look that's left your eyes That's why this comes as no, as no surprise" meaning she doesnt love him the same as she once did so she should've saw it coming. and " can't believe that I stayed till today" meaning that this has been coming for awhile now. "yeah you and i are will be a tough act to follow" meaning no one will compare to what they once had together even tho they werent meant to be
