I took a long hard look
At the words in that book
I had to cast my last stone
And take the long way home

I couldn't look you in the eye
And tell another lie
Have to do this on my own
I'll take the long way home, the long way home

I don't know how you feel
Or if I ever will, yeah
Do you wait by the phone
While I take the long way home, the long way home

Still here with folded hands
Hoping you understand
My mistakes are my own
But I'll take the long way home, the long way home

General CommentI took a long hard look At the words in that book I had to cast my last stone And take the long way home.
This means that the person is looking back at their life and trying to make sense of something that can't so they must cast off the past and move on.

I couldn't look you in the eye And tell another lie Have to do this on my own I'll take the long way home, the long way home. This means that in the past the person they loved they have lied to and now they cannot anymore so they try to stop and they must deal with it on their own which means they need to end this cycle of pain and lying. They need to do this alone so the relationship is over.

I don't know how you feel Or if I ever will, yeah Do you wait by the phone While I take the long way home, the long way home. This means they don't understand what the other person is feeling and they doubt if they ever will they are wondering if the person is going to wait for them to find a way to understand them.

Still here with folded hands Hoping you understand My mistakes are my own But I'll take the long way home, the long way home. This means they are asking the other person involved to understand to give them a chance to correct the mistakes and give them a second chance in the relationship but they'll need time to do this.
