Good Intentions

I think this song is about a guy whose girlfriend left him, and he's trying to figure out what went wrong. He is endlessly questioning why she left him, and stating that he wants to be of importance to her. More detail below.

Lines-by-lines interpretation....

Am I alone in the city lights? Am I alone when the moments right? Am I?

At first, he's questioning, "did she really leave? am I really by myself now?"

Did I complain that Im feeling used? Is it you? Is it you? Its never enough.

Then, he questions why she left. He considers that maybe he did something, which is complaining about being used. I'm assuming she dated him for a superficial purpose, to use him, rather than out of love, which is why she dumped him. He also questions if it's just her, if he is at no fault for the break up. Next, he comes to the realization that, no matter what he does to get her to love him, it's never enough.

I want to be your heart that breaks I want to be your hiding place I want to be your one solution; I just got no execution.

I think that all of the stanzas organized in this fashion (I want to be your _____) refer to the fact that the man singing wants to be important to the girl. But he's failed, and he blames it on the fact that he can't get her to understand his feelings because he is not good at expressing them. That's why nothing he does is ever enough; he can't express things well enough for them to be satiating.

Are all my dreams finally coming true? Is everybody in love with you? Are they?

He's been insecure throughout the relationship, and often worried that he would be thrown away for another man. Now, he is questioning whether or not that's true. Did she dump him to get together with a "better" man?

Anyway, this is my first time interpreting a song on here. I don't know anything about the artist, so if there's something obvious I'm missing, it might have changed my interpretation. However, I think the beauty of this site is in seeing the different interpretations that people come up with. Music is like books: each reader alters the story as they read, because their interpretation of the information they are consuming will never be a perfect duplicate of the author's.

I believe this song is about a guy that has really strong feelings for a girl but is too shy to tell her about how he feels. He wants this girl to like him more than anything else in the world. He is scared because of the way he feels and how much control she has over him. He is concerned that maybe he did something wrong and that's why she doesn't like him. This girl appears to be out of this guy's league, the girl that everyone wants. He feels as if his world would only be complete if he had her but he is just too shy to open up to her because of fear of rejection.
