I was perched outside in the pouring rain
Trying to make myself a sail
Then I'll float to you, my darling
With the evening on my tail
Although not the most honest means of travel
It gets me there nonetheless
I'm a heartless man at worst, babe
And a helpless one at best

Darling, I'll bathe your skin
I'll even wash your clothes
Just give me some candy, before I go
Oh, darling, I'll kiss your eyes
And lay you down on your rug
Just give me some candy
After my hug

Oh, and I'm often false-explaining
But to her it plays out all the same
And although I'm left defeated
It gets held against my name
I know you got plenty to offer, baby
But I guess I've taken quite enough
While I'm some stain there on your bed-sheet
You're my diamond in the rough

Darling, I'll bathe your skin
I'll even wash your clothes
Just give me some candy
Before I go
Oh, darling, I'll kiss your eyes
And lay you down on your rug
Just give me some candy
After my hug

I know that the writing's on the wall
But, darling, I'll bathe your skin
I'll even wash your clothes
Just give me some candy
Before I go
Oh, darling, I'll kiss your eyes
And lay you down on your rug
Just give me some candy
After my hug

Oh, and I'll be there waiting for you
And know that I'll be there waiting for you
Oh, I'll be there waiting for you
Oh, I'll be there waiting for you
Oh, I'll be there waiting for you
Oh, I'll be there waiting for you
(Oh, I'll be there waiting for you) all the cutthroats and their jagged ends
All of them have got me waiting and waiting
(Oh, I'll be there waiting for you) all the cheap and the sugary philosophies
Have got me on the fence just waiting and waiting
(Oh, I'll be there waiting for you) all the angels and their halos
All they do is keep me waiting and waiting
(Oh, I'll be there waiting for you) all the cutthroats and their jagged ends
All of them have got me waiting and waiting
(Oh, I'll be there waiting for you) all the cheap and the sugary philosophies
Have got me on the fence just waiting and waiting
(Oh, I'll be there waiting for you) all the angels and their halos
All they do is keep me waiting and waiting

the man desperately wants to make love with this woman and he's willing to do anything - bathe her skin, wash her clothes, kiss her eyes, ect.

his feelings for her are sincere but naturally he wants more - he wants sex. candy=sex.

"Oh, and I'm often found explaining But to her it plays out all the same and although I'm left defeated It gets held against my name I know you got plenty to offer baby But I guess I've taken quite enough well I'm some stain there on your bed sheet You're my diamond in the rough"

    • these lines sum up the situation. he's trying to explain to her that his feelings for her are true, but to her, it doesn't matter, he's like every other man and she wont give up her virginity because she's afraid that's all he's after. she says no, and tries to tell him "i've got more to offer than just sex".

so he says to her, I'll be here waiting for you - you're worth it.

the last lines are all the possible reasons that the woman is waiting.. the things that are keeping him from having sex with her.
cut throats/jagged ends = surrounding world, relatives, judgemental people, ect cheap and sugary philosophies= old fashioned values/morals that people live by such as the saying "waiting till marriage"
angels and their halos = one's religion

    Song Meaning

I'm sure Paolo has spoken about this song on the radio here in Scotland. As I understand it the song is about the difficulty in knowing the difference between love and lust. Many of us (especially when we're young) mistakenly fall in 'lust' thinking we have fallen in love. If it's lust it doesn't last, whereas love really is forever. Unfortunately it often happens that one person in the relationship is 'in love' and the other is in lust. For the person who is in love it is painful beyond words to experience such a situation. Each passing day they are bewildered as they notice the other person is inexplicably pulling away from them. In 'Candy' Paolo sings about a man who finds himself in such a situation, and he uses the word 'candy' to try and explain that 'feeling' experienced during the early part of a relationship. The 'feeling' he is talking about is the utter joy they had before, and which he now fears he is losing, and he yearns for it to return. That is why he begs once more for 'candy'.

It's a sore learning Paolo, but you're the better for it. The hurt will heal, and you will know by now that it really is better to have loved and lost than not to have loved at all. God bless ye wee man.

A man who loves a woman who isn't returning his love but once did. The man would do anything to have her back.

Thought "Just give me some candy" may be him metaphorically asking her to return his love...?

    Any ideas?

At the very end, he says

All the cutthroats and their jagged ends All of them have got me waiting and waiting All the cheap and the sugary philosophies Have got me on the fence just waiting and waiting All the angels, and their halos All they do is keep me waiting and waiting

I love that part, his voice is surreal, full of longing and pain.

i think he's singing this to a girl who's tired of feeling let down and not wanted and has given up on their relationship but he's saying i'll take care of u, i'll look after u i realise what i've done just give me some candy (love) Oh, and i'm often false explaining But to her it plays out all the same -hes not been completly open with her...so yeah kinda like the 1st comment. My boyfriend told me this song reminds him of me particulary the verse Oh, and i'm often false explaining ( he didnt tell me everything that was going on) But to her it plays out all the same (when he told me bits of it, it sounded really dumb and i was like yeah yeah) and although i'm left defeated (he didnt know what to do cause he couldnt open up) It gets held against my name (my friends thought he was talking rubbish) i know you got plenty to offer baby (self explanitory) But I guess I've taken quite enough (i've had my own problems to deal with and he hasn't helped) well i'm some stain there on your bedsheet (i went out on a date cause i thought it was over cause he hadnt been in touch for ages) You're my diamond in the rough (i'm his escape from the daily problems he has to face)

This is just how it means to us, i've no idea what paolo nutini was thinking about when he wrote it, he could even be refering to drugs by the word candy...as candy in the uk well u can get it in like white powder in plastic tubes (can't remember the name of them lol)...so i dunno

Beautiful song! And Paolo got lyrics so nicely, but idea for it came from a simple moment in life.

    Here's the quote:

    • The first single will be heart tugging ballad 'Candy' which was written after an argument with his girlfriend, when it suddenly occurred to him that the fault lay with him. "That doesn't necessarily portray the state our relationship is in, or anything more than just one evening of defeat. But that's all a song has to be."

    Paolo's back :))))

hello people?! this song is clearly about him being an addict. He traveled in the rain, all the way to his ex's house; for some drugs. She's pretty much his pusher 'man', and he's begging for some drugs. Or some shot, whatever drug addicts do. But she's all like 'I don't think so, babe. You've had enough. And I love you--I don't want you to die."

But he's not having it...he seduces her for some crack. And him being Paolo Nutuni, (a gorgeous gentleman) she falls for it.

Haha, yeah I'm just joking. This song is obviously about him wanting her but she's doesn't want him anymore. So he's like saying all these romantic/passionate stuff that he'll do for her--to show how much he wants her. He is so hot btw..like this man wouldn't have to ask me twice. I'll lay it all for him in a heartbeat.!

Are you people really that damn naive? You really think candy is a metaphor for love?? Pay attention children. He's talking about sex. He's simply stating that he will do anything that she wants if she will just sleep with him one more time before he leaves out... hence the you have a lot to offer baby but i guess ive taken quite enough im just a stain on there on your bedsheet. you poor kids are just obsessed with love. get over it.

This song is about the spark(candy) in relationships and finding it after it is lost.

"Darling I'll bathe your skin I'll even wash your clothes Just give me some candy"

Light Up The Sky
Van Halen
The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

Standing On The Edge Of Summer
Thursday
In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

Dreamwalker
Silent Planet
I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.

Plastic Bag
Ed Sheeran
“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it. “I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
