I never want to be strangers again, she says,
There are tears in her eyes.
And later on when I'm all by myself,
there are tears in mine.
We sell our love like it was fresh lemonade,
We yell as cars go by.
Run up to strangers and we tug at their coats,
And we plead with them to try.

But you, you've taken all of my dreams
And melted them to stone,
And you've skipped them across the water
And they're gone.
But you, you gave me nothing at all
But hope when I was weak,
Now you're gone, I've played along
And I'm alone.

Growing up is just betraying ourselves,
We do it all the time,
A year ago I was in love with a girl
Well now she's gone, I'm fine.
And here we are together,
Yeah now here's our favorite song,
Well we've talked about forever, yeah,
Well maybe that's too long.

But you, you've taken all of my dreams
And melted them to stone,
And you've skipped them across the water
And they're gone.
But you, you gave me nothing at all
But hope when I was weak,
Now you're gone, I've played along
And I'm alone.

And I'm alone,
She left me,
And I'm alone,
Tired and weak,
And I'm alone,
It's raining and I'm wondering if I'm happy.
And I'm alone,
Talk to me please,
And I'm alone,
Breathe me in deep,
And I'm alone,
Ask me to leave, let's go grab a beer or something.

My InterpretationI really like this song.
It reminds me about my relationship with one of my old friends.
Him and I had some rough patches and didn't talk for awhile, the first line of this song reminds me of exactly how I felt. When I started talking to him again, I was so glad, I never wanted be apart from him again, I never wanted become a stranger to him again.
The idea that a person can both hurt and help you is what I get from the you've taken all my dreams and you gave me hope. One person can hurt you, make you feel bad, but for some reason the same person can be that person you need, that person that supports, motivates, and gives you hope.
I think the ending of the song is just that conversation with yourself when you don't know whether you are happier or sadder with that person not in your life. It's hard to be with a person who both hurts you, but also supports you so much.
The last line is so beautiful. It creates an opportunity, it's him asking her out to just be. Not to fight or have some deep conversation about their futures, but rather just go out for a beer, talk, have fun, or do something for fun.
