"Beyond Here Lies Nothin'" as written by and Bob Dylan....
Oh well, I love you pretty baby
You're the only love I've ever known
Just as long as you stay with me
The whole world is my throne
Beyond here lies nothin'
Nothing we can call our own

Well, I'm moving after midnight
Down boulevards of broken cars
Don't know what I do without it
Without this love that we call ours
Beyond here lies nothin'
Nothing but the moon and stars

Down every street there's a window
And every window made of glass
We'll keep on loving pretty baby
For as long as love will last
Beyond here lies nothin'
But the mountains of the past

Well my ship is in the harbor
And the sails are spread
Listen to me, pretty baby
Lay your hand upon my head
Beyond here lies nothin'
Nothing done and nothing said

General CommentI look at this song in the context of the album and Dylan's life. First of all Together For Life implies the overall theme of the album is a love that has lasted through it all. Second, the album's inspiration mostly came from border towns in Texas/Mexico, very metaphorical for an ending "beyond which lies nothing".

Thinking about Dylan's life, the only love that has lasted through the years (many women have come and gone) is his love for music, something that has never and will never abandon him. They have been "together through life".

I feel this song is more of a realization that there is not much left. He is in the proverbial sunset of his career or to keep with the albums symbolism, he is reaching the borders with his music. Hence, nothing but the mountains of the best, beyond here there is "nothing we (him and music) can call their own.

I feel this song is an all time great for Dylan.

General CommentI think this is a great song, and I'm really looking forward to the new album now! Great move by putting it up for free download for one day only, can't get enough of it. Not so sure about the meaning but it seems to me to just be about how bad things are getting, and there's nothing to celebrate beyond his love with this pretty baby. Maybe the ship (a sign of change in earlier songs) being stuck in the harbour with nowhere to go is kind of bleak? Change has come but everything's the same? What do you all think?

My InterpretationThis ship theme is indeed a common one for Dylan. I think that 'his ship' may be his woman; she's ready to go, but hasn't left yet. He's telling her to stay, because 'beyond here lies nothing.'

Perhaps he's fearing that there is indeed something out there that she might want/find, but he's trying to convince her otherwise. I think his fears are correct.

General CommentI believe is more about atheism than anything else. Beyond here lies nothing is the whole point.

General CommentThe ship reminds me of "Spanish Boots of Spanish Leather". I feel that she's the only thing that means anything for him anymore, and yet he has to going away.

General CommentAs I heard this in True Blood's season 2 finale, the message is very plain and simple. Life is worth nothing without your true love at your side.
