"April" as written by and P J Harvey John Parish....
April, how could
I not have seen
April, you coming
April how could I've
Worn inappropriate clothing?
April, all that careful stepping,
Rounding of my soul
And now your rain
April, I feel you leaving

I don't know what silence means
It could mean anything

April, won't you answer me?
These days just seem to crush me
Hatching, collapsing, tumbling down
April, what if I drown?
I drown?

April, I see you leaving
I don't know what silence means
It could mean anything

I dream
I dream

April, April
Did I want you?
Did I want change?

April, your rain overcomes me

General CommentI think its about getting old; The month "April" represents spring and the prime of her life, she wasn't prepared for it (wore inappropriate clothing) and now, it's over. If you think about it in the context of the song it makes sense. At the end she's looking back, missing being young.

General CommentLove this tracks, one of my favourites off the album, although I have no idea what it's about....maybe in typical PJ style April is a fictional long lost daughter? Or maybe April is another side of PJ's personality? Love the expression on 'I don't know what silence means...', what is she getting at?????

General Commenti've had an idea that it's about grandmother singing to her granddaughter. but it doesn't explain all aspects of the song.
    my favourite from AWAMWB too.

General CommentAnd at the end, when she says "I dream..." She sings in her normal voice-in her dreams she is still the same person she has always been.

General CommentYeah the idea that it's about April the month rather than a girl makes a lot of sense...

General Commentmy favorite from the new album. i always thought of her as referring to the month rather than a person. and i immediately thought of the line "april is the cruellest month" from TS Eliot's "The Waste Land" when i first heard it, which goes along with the feeling about april here...

General CommentI've always thought this song was about getting older and not being ready for it. April (youth) has come and gone without the singer realizing it.

    April showers bring May flowers.

"April, dressed in all his trim, hath put a spirit of youth in everything."
    - William Shakespeare, sonnet 98

allviolet mentioned T.S. Eliot - "April is the cruellest month"

Then again, it could be about depression. The sadness of the rain, being unprepared for it and the silence. "These days just seem to crush me"... "What if I drown?" ... "April, your rain, it overcomes me"

Perhaps both? Sadness and getting older. That being said, I've never thought of this as a sad song. I find it quite uplifting.
