Waiting for a beam to break through here
A chain way vision, all bright and clear
And they talk and they dance

I was expecting something pure with a golden hair
Arms full of bracelets and smoke in the air
And they talk and they dance

Here comes darkness, just afternoon
Waiting for a sign
If I survive, I'll worship the moon
Or something, anything

This must be it, long for bliss
First it was so quiet
And now I know I'm not alone in here
And they talked and they danced

Two elements, collide in my open hand
Making me a viewer, I am water and sand
And they talk and they dance

Your hand on my hips, speak friendly to me
I've been studying for years, patiently
Is this as far as you can take me?

This must be it, long for bliss
First it was so quiet
And now I know I'm not alone in here
And they talked and they danced

This must be it, long for bliss
First it was so quiet
And now I know I'm not alone in here
And they talked and they danced

This must be it, long for bliss
First it was so quiet
And now I know I'm not alone in here

This must be it, long for bliss
First it was so quiet
And now I know I'm not alone in here
And they talked and they danced

I actually think this song is about a religious experience. She's been a faithful follower for years, and she wants nirvana. It seems rather straightforward to me. "I've been serving for years, patiently, is this as far as you can take me?" Perhaps heaven or whatever isn't what she expected. "Here comes darkness just after noon, waiting for a sign...if I survive I'll worship the moon, something, anything." Maybe it's the end of the world, and she isn't sure what's going on. If her life is spared, she'll worship whatever deity saves her. And then it erupts "This must be it, longed for bliss" the light after darkness comes, her heaven comes. "First it was so quiet, now I know I'm not alone here" she wasn't sure if she was doing it right, but now she knows there IS a heaven, or whatever. Maybe she died somewhere in between there? Lol. "They talk and they dance" gives me images of angels, or deities, or spiritual entities of some sort gathering around her. And she probably has no idea what they are.

You know, now that I think about it, maybe it's about aliens. Like, I could totally flip this around and have it be about her getting abducted. I wouldn't doubt it. I do, however, highly doubt that it's about drugs. Not saying that's wrong, you can interpret it however you like (that's what you're supposed to do) but I just think there's more to it. I also feel that way due to other songs she's written. For example, What Else is There? off of The Understanding could also be taken in a spiritual discovery context, or car accident. And her solo album Fever Ray was mainly about her experience as a mother...yeah, I just don't think it's about drugs.

she starts off by talking about that she wants light and free vision. she is depressed.

she's at a party, they're talking and having fun. se is not, so she takes som drugs. she was expecting it to get better , but it didn't- the suddenly it hits her, the upper. so she gets her hopes up, but is still negative.. everyone is having fun.

She was exspecting glam and glitter. but anyway, if she survives rthis she'll worshiiip the moon, anything.

she got her beam of light.

this must be it! long for bliss. first it was so quiet, now i'm not alone..

i've bee nstudying for years, is this as fare you can take me? she is on the down..

But still a long full bliss,..

    Maybe..

I like all the above interpretations. This song is amazing and Karin's lyrics are even more esoteric than usual. I think the words are:

two elements collide in my open hand making me a viewer I am water and sand

    My Interpretation

"This must be it, long for bliss" I believe the singer is talking about waiting for someone. This someone is a person they could possibly love or perhaps just be infatuated with. "I was expecting something pure with golden hair..." Apparently, who they have found was something not of their expectations; moreover, disillusion hits hard when they find that the person cannot take them as far as they would've liked. All in all, it's a song about finding someone you are enthralled with. "Your hands on my hips speak friendly to me." (My favorite line)

    My Interpretation

I quickly reject the religious interpretation on the grounds that the heavy use of dance references would not be compatible with most religious scripture, God doesn't dig dancing.

I think this is about a woman first going to a club, or perhaps some sort of ballroom.

If one knows how it feels to be early to a club that you haven't been before, then you may relate to this idea, the nervousness that one feels, the excitement. One is afraid, if they survive, they'll worship the night-life and the environment. One is waiting patiently for something to happen, something fun, then when things start, it's ecstasy, so much excitement. Later in this song the feelings associated with meeting a new person seem to be described. She's dancing and she's having fun, she's scared but she's eager.

A beautiful song describing the thrill of the night.

    My Opinion

I think this song is about a woman loving someone in a platonic way. She is probably in a big hall or a ballroom where there is a ball, people dance and talk. The room was empty at first but then people started coming and it was suddenly so crowded.

" Your hand on my hips Speak friendly to me I’ve been studying for years Patiently Is this as far as you can take me?"

She wants him to notice her feelings, notice herself but she is just a friend to him so he doesn't care. She had been around him for a long time yet he still sees her as a friend. She wants to be more than a friend to him.

"And they talked And they danced"

The guy is in love with another woman apparently and he dances with her, talks with her whereas Karin is watching them silently.

This song means a lot to me and gives me goosebumps everytime I listen to it. Totally a masterpiece.

    My Interpretation

Waiting for a beam to break through here A chain way vision, all bright and clear And they talk and they dance (Took some sort of psychedelic drug for the first time, waiting for effect. Thinking about things she's heard other people describe, as well as how fun it suddenly is to dance and talk.)

I was expecting something pure with a golden hair Arms full of bracelets and smoke in the air And they talk and they dance (Expecting to see a God/Godess, like other people on the same drugs, imagining to see it when she's dancing and talking)

Here comes darkness, just afternoon Waiting for a sign If I survive, I'll worship the moon Or something, anything (The trip goes bad. Horrible thoughts visit her, she wants it to be gone, and if she survives this, she vows she'll do anything)

This must be it, long for bliss First it was so quiet And now I know I'm not alone in here And they talked and they danced (Her head is quiet until the drug takes effect, she feels she isn't alone in her head, hearing voices and stuff. She can't understand how other people are able to dance and talk on this drug.)

Two elements, collide in my open hand Making me a viewer, I am water and sand And they talk and they dance (She becomes entranced by things she sees around her, in her hands. Patterns and such, I suppose. She feels outside herself, still wondering how people are able to talk and dance while high on this)

Your hand on my hips, speak friendly to me I've been studying for years, patiently Is this as far as you can take me? (Maybe someone wants to dance with her? The drug? A person? In any case she is mildly disappointed at the drug, since she's been studying its effects for years and this was a bad experience)

This is my interpretation because SWIM might have experienced JUST that, exclaiming a loud 'Oh, shit!' upon reading these lyrics.

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."
