The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.
The day before I left
Started missing you like hell like hell
Now I'm frustrated everyday
That you live so far away
We could have a postcard relationship
We could build a castle in the air, it isn't fair
Marie Marie you live so far away from me
And it's so hard to be happy when you're in another country
Guess I could try and steal a plane
And fly over every day day
Or how about we meet just halfway
And have an endless holiday a holiday
Marie Marie you live so far away from me
And it's so hard to be happy when you're in another country
The tyranny of distance stands over our broken hearts
The tyranny of distance stands over our broken hearts
Marie Marie you live so far away from me
And it's so hard to be happy when you're in another country
Marie Marie you live so far away from me
And it's so hard to be happy when you're in another country
The tyranny of distance stands over our broken hearts
The tyranny of distance stands over our broken hearts
The tyranny of distance stands over our broken hearts
The tyranny of distance stands over our broken hearts
