I tried to stay healthy for you
I stayed at that cane's length from peril
But lonely threads constrict my heart
As you perch on that barrel

Sing to them all and I'll stand by
Though jealousy it threatens
Smoke's around my blackened lungs
It is my only weapon

I hate these bags beneath my eyes
I know when your song's over
You'll come back to this bed of ours
And be my only lover

The carnal thoughts they are beyond us
A man I am but only
To be your faithful other half
That neither one be lonely

Cold and old and here today
Our faces melt together
I would I had the means to make
Our persons one together

We are you and me and so it is

General CommentHe's lovesick and she is either kind of a whore, and he's using metaphor to describe her whoriness, or she's also a musician and on the road, gets lonely, etc. Either way she's not exactly faithful. But he'll wait until she's done being a whore or whatever and she realizes that he's the one for her. He's not getting any younger, in addition to being lovesick, getting older is kind of a sickness in a way, hence he *tried* to stay healthy" for her, as opposed to *trying*. There's really no fighting the disease of age, so he's acknowledging the failure up front. But she's not getting any younger either, so he knows she'll come to him eventually. And she will, he seems very sure about that. They are she and he and so it is.
