You know, a lot of girls be
Thinkin' my songs are about them, but
This is not to get confused
This one's for you

Baby, you my everything, you all I ever wanted
We could do it real big, bigger than you ever done it
You be up on everything, other hoes ain't never on it
I want this forever, I swear I can spend whatever on it
'Cause she hold me down every time I hit her up
When I get right, I promise that we gon' live it up
She made me beg for it 'til she give it up
And I say the same thing every single time

I say, you the fuckin' best (ayy), you the fuckin' best (ayy)
You the fuckin' best (ayy), you the fuckin' best (ayy)
You the best I ever had (ayy), best I ever had (ayy)
Best I ever had (ayy), best I ever had
I say, you the fuckin'

Know you got a roommate, call me when there's no one there
Put the key under the mat and you know I be over there (yup)
I be over there, shawty, I be over there
I be hittin' all the spots that you ain't even know was there
Ha, and you don't even have to ask twice
You could have my heart or we could share it like the last slice
Always felt like you was so accustomed to the fast life
Have a nigga thinkin' that he met you in a past life
Sweatpants, hair tied, chillin' with no make-up on
That's when you're the prettiest, I hope that you don't take it wrong
You don't even trip when friends say, "You ain't bringin' Drake along?"
You know that I'm workin', I'll be there soon as I make it home
And she a patient in my waiting room
Never pay attention to the rumors and what they assume
And until them girls prove it
I'm the one that never get confused with

'Cause baby, you my everything, you all I ever wanted

Sex, love, pain, baby, I be on that Tank shit
Buzz so big I could probably sell a blank disc
When my album drop, bitches'll buy it for the picture
And niggas'll buy it too and claim they got it for they sister
Magazine paper, girl, the money ain't the issue
They bring dinner to my room and ask me to initial
She call me the referee 'cause I be so official
My shirt ain't got no stripes, but I can make your pussy whistle
Like the Andy Griffith theme song
And who told you to put them jeans on?
Double cup love, you the one I lean on
Feelin' for a fix, then you should really get your fiend on
Yeah, just know my condo is the crack spot
Every single show, she out there reppin' like a mascot
Get it from the back and make your fuckin' bra strap pop
All up in your slot 'til a nigga hit the jackpot

I say, you the fuckin' best (ayy), you the fuckin' best (ayy)
You the fuckin' best (ayy), you the fuckin' best (ayy)
You the best I ever had (ayy), best I ever had (ayy)
Best I ever had (ayy), best I ever had

Uh, aw yeah
See, this the type of joint you gotta dedicate to somebody
Just make sure they that special somebody, ha
Young Money
Yeah
Yeah
You know who you are
I got you

    My Interpretation

You could interpret this song in two ways, and interestingly the two are basically opposites.

One is the obvious surface meaning: Drake is singing to one specific girl, she's the best he ever had, and he wants to be with her forever. It's romantic. I think this is the way most casual listeners, and women in particular, interpret the song.

A closer listen reveals the song differently. Basically, Drake is singing about really dope sex, but not with any girl in particular. He wants every girl he sleeps with to think she's his number one, and that she's really the best he's ever had. It's still got a really sweet message, but it is quite ironic.

This view begins with the intro: "You know a lot of girls be... thinkin' my songs are about them, but... this is not to get confused. This one's for you." He never names the woman; the song means all things to all listeners.

Seen in this light, the meaning of a number of lyrics changes. "Never pay attention to them rumors and what they assume, and until them girls prove it I'm the one to never get confused with, cause..." is essentially an admission.

In the hook Drake says, "And I say the same thing every single time..." You could read this as Drake telling one girl the same thing every time they have sex, but I think he means he says the same thing to ALL the women he sleeps with. He's kind of a sick genius, since it would make all these women feel special.

The ambiguity is reiterated in the outro: "See, this the type of joint you got to dedicate to somebody. Just make sure they that special somebody. You know who you are... I got you." But he doesn't dedicate the song to anybody. Instead, he says, "you know who you are," in essence dedicating the song to any and every woman he's ever been with.

Really a great song, made even better by the multiple levels on which you can appreciate it.

Light Up The Sky
Van Halen
The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

Standing On The Edge Of Summer
Thursday
In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."

Ed Sheeran
How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.

Page
Ed Sheeran
There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
