Shelf life
perfected extension
in cans and jars and rows of selections
plus things you don't know what-so-ever
hidden but on display
that perfect rind complexion
is sculpted DNA

shelf life
the patent is applied for
the seeds providing
evolved in a test tube
and unwanted waste radiation
is no longer waste
fruit and vegetable exposure
kills bugs with no aftertaste

General Comment"shelf life" expands on the theme of dystopic bioengineering first explored in "valhalla's celtic robbie," on 'brown.' ("the patent is applied for" is a line from that song.) at the time "shelf life" appeared, genetically modified foods -- pesticide-resistant soybeans, for instance -- were just starting to appear in a mass scale, and the left was just starting to rally around opposition to them. GM is now fairly common in agriculture, though opposition continues to be voiced, but the paranoia on display here can be easily extended to the era of cloning and genetic modification of animals and humans (gene therapy, pharmaceuticals research, etc.).
