"Swimming" as written by and Stephen Patrick/welch Mackey....
Your songs remind me of swimming
Which I forgot when I started to sink
Drank further away from the shore
And deeper into the drink

Sat on the bottom of the ocean,
A stern and stubborn rock
'Cause your songs remind me of swimming,
But somehow I forgot

I was sinking, but now I'm sunk
And I was drinking, and now I'm drunk
Your songs remind me of swimming
But somehow I forgot

I tried to remember the chorus
I can't remember the verse
Cause that song that sent me swimming
Is now the life jacket that burst

Rotting like a wreck on the ocean floor
Sinking like a siren that can't swim anymore
Your songs remind me of swimming
But I can't swim any more

Pull me out the water, cold and blue
I open my eyes and I see that it's you
So I dive straight back in the ocean
So I dive straight back in the ocean

Take a deep breath, suck the water in my chest
Take a deep breath, suck the water in my chest
And cross my fingers, and hope for the best
Then all of a sudden, I heard a note

It started in my chest and ended in my throat
Then I realized, then I realized, then I realized
I was swimming, yes, I was swimming
And now I'm swimming, yes, I am swimming

Your songs remind me of swimming
Which I forgot when I started to sink
Your songs remind me of swimming
Which I forgot when I started to sink

Oh, your songs remind me of swimming
Which I forgot when I started
Your songs remind me of swimming
Which I forgot when I started to sink

My InterpretationI think this song is about Loosing yourself, weather it be in the world or in some activity, and hearing something that reminds you of who you are and what you used to be. It brings you back to who you really are. Because as you were drowning you were loosing yourself. While your swimming, your perfectly comfortable with who you are.

General CommentI have a version (length: 3:00) that goes like this:

Your songs remind me of swimming,
Which I forgot when I started to sink
Dragged further away from the shore,
    And deeper into the drink

I was sinking, now I'm sunk
And I was drinking, now I'm drunk
Oh I was sinking, now I'm sunk,
And I was drinking, oh but now I'm drunk

I tried to remember the chorus,
    I can't remember the verse
Cause that song that sent me swimming,
Is now the life jacket that burst

Rotting like a wreck on the ocean floor,
Sinking like a siren that can't swim anymore
Your songs remind me of swimming,
    But I can't swim anymore

Then all of a sudden, I heard a note,
It started in my chest and ended in my throat
    Then I realized,
    Then I realized,
    I was swimming,
    Yes I was swimming,
    And now I'm swimming,
    Yes I am

Your songs remind me of swimming,
Which I forgot when I started to sink

General CommentIt's very obviously about falling off the tracks and having an old song/singer bringing back memories and getting her to pull herself together again because of this rediscovery. I think she wanted to get back in touch with herself but couldn't, began rejecting help and letting herself stagnate. Without being concious of doing so she began to get herself back to reality all due to this 'song'. It's no secret that Flo had a bit of a turbulent teenagehood and I feel this is a homage to coming out of it.

It's a sweet song in a way and I'd love to know who this singer and their songs are.

General CommentYep, that's another demo version. This is the more uptempo version that's usually called "Swimming Song".
Now there's another new, Lungs-y version that you can buy off of iTunes! to add to the confusion, lol.

General CommentIn the Lungs version, at least, there's that 'watery' vocal effect toward the end of the song (that makes it sound somewhat like she's singing underwater) that's just killer.

I haven't really given the song much thought since I really just got into Flo + Machine a DAY ago-- Can't stop listening-- Incredible SOUND. I might amend this with my thoughts later. <3

General Commenti by far prefer this version the other one takes its self waaaaay to seriously lol (i still love florences music though lol)

in general i think this song is (in my opinion at least) just about going to do something then thinking about something or seeing something that reminds you of something that made you smile :) and i genuinely feel like smiling after this song (the old version without the army of instruments) a really lovely song.

My InterpretationI feel this song can be about just what it sounds like...SONGS... she listens to music that she loves and it reminds her of "swimming" or a sense of freedom...being happy..general peaceful-ness. but then "all of a sudden" she realizes that she does not need this music (or whatever it was that made her happy) or so she thought) and she can swim herself... hence the lyric that says "And I was swimming, And NOW I AM SWIMMING". <3

My InterpretationI think "the song" that she is talking about represents a relationship she has with a guy.

    Sinking = falling in love
swimming = being hopelessly in love although in the song it alludes to something being wrong with the relationship
and if you look at the other elements, like an exploding life jacket, and jumping back in the water after seeing him, show that something is wrong

    Just some thoughts

General CommentThe singing and swimming are the feeling of elation, utter joy, such as found by being in love with someone or a singer singing or being buzzed (drunk or punch-drunk). But after a moment of elation are one must return to their usual state, often followed by a feeling of loss or depression (sinking, drowning). A bit like being addicted to a person as if they were a drug, but that analogy is used too often in modern culture, so this is a more artistic way of looking at it.
Learning to get over that loss and looking forward to creating positivity in your own life restore a life to a happier state of normal and allow moments of elation in remembrance of the initial joy. This is akin to overcoming a drug addiction, but in the song it is an addiction to a person.
