I built a man made out of bricks, and lived inside his chest
I beat my head against the wall to make a heart deep in his breast
I smashed my fist against his ribs to suck the air inside
And swing by swing, and blow by blow, I brought that man to life

I built a man and cut his skin, and lived inside his heart
I pumped it with my fingertips, and loved it from the start
And with every beat I gave him a heartbeat of my own
And filled his veins with the blood I had

Till his blood,
Till his blood,
Till his blood,
Was my own

Oh, I'd build you up, but we're not made of the same stuff,
And even though I knocked you down, you're so much stronger than me
Well, I would build you up, but we're not made of the same stuff,
And even though I knocked you down, you're so much stronger than me

[Florence: I love that song! That song makes me so happy!
It sounds really good, I think...]

General CommentI feel that this song is about a woman who created this perfect image in her head, this ideal man that she took solace in. But, she put so much of herself into it, that she could no longer be comforted by the image, something made only of imagination. So she gave up on it. And it wasn't sad, nor was it happy, it was just an end.

General CommentI love this song and I love Florence + the Machine!

I think the song is about a woman's unrelenting and dogged attempts to force her man to become the perfect companion for her. The man being made of bricks is a metaphor for the fact that her creation of this ideal man resulted in something that superficially seems real and sincere, but truly is not so. After all, we can't force people to be and act like something they're not.

The lyrics are typically Florence - metaphorical, passionate, and just a little creepy. :)

General CommentI thoguht it was more joyful, personally.

Like she'd put all this work into making something, and now it owrks, and takes on a life of it's own!

All of the pain and hurt sort of words, both for her and in some ways the brick man, are all the effort and love she pours into making him, and finally it all pays off - he's alive.
