"Epistemology" as written by and M. Ward....
I was raised in a Catholic school, learned who to fire with and pray to
I learned how to hold on from a book of old Psalms
And if you're trying to sing an old song, you're getting all the words wrong
Well, you're just a-following along too closely in the book

I learned how to keep my head from something Paul said
About keeping the fruit in the spirit from the chorus down to the hook
And sometimes I wonder what in God's name did I do to deserve you
Oh, to deserve you

'Cause I just rolled and I tumbled, down a long road I stumbled
While shooting in the dark as to what's best
And finally I found you without ever learning how to
I put the right foot in front of the leg and beyond that is anybody's guess

I learned how to keep my head from something Paul said
About keeping the fruit in the spirit from the chorus down to the hook
Oh, and sometimes I wonder what in God's name did I do to deserve you
Oh, to deserve you

'Cause I just rolled and I tumbled, down a long road I stumbled
While shooting in the dark as to what's best
And finally I found you without ever learning how to
I put the right foot in front of the leg

'Cause I just rolled and I tumbled, down a long road I stumbled
While shooting in the dark as to what's best
Oh, as to what's best, as to what's best
And finally I found you without ever learning how to
I put the right foot in front of the leg and beyond that is anybody's guess

General Commenteasily the best off Hold Time.

Epistemology: the study or a theory of the nature and grounds of knowledge especially with reference to its limits and validity

General CommentYes, since Epistemology is the study of knowledge and what we can and can't know, I think M. Ward is telling us what he thinks the limits are. This is just one more brushstroke to paint the picture of what love is, and he's emphasizing the messy-try-and-try-again-ness of it. Sometimes stuff is just so convoluted that you fall back on what you know, which is "I find myself loving this person, so I do things to show them, other than that, I don't know what else to say." I like that simplicity.

My InterpretationThis song perfectly encapsulates how it feels when you're falling in love. It starts to happen just when you've given up trying. "And beyond that is anybody's guess."

General CommentI heard the first line as "I was raised in a Catholic school, learned who to fight with and pray to". And I definitely agree that it's probably "right foot in front of the left".

My InterpretationI believe most of M. Ward's songs have a spiritual meaning about finding God rather than about a girl.
