"Live Alone" as written by Alexander Paul Kapranos Huntley, Nicholas John Mccarthy, Robert Hardy and Paul Robert Thompson....
I want to live alone
Because the greatest love
Is always ruined by the bickering
The argument of living
So I want to live alone
I could be happy on my own

Live the rest of my life
With the vaguest of feeling

Wherever you are
Whoever is there
You know that I'll be here
Wishing I could be there

So I'm going to live alone
I'm not saying that out love is the greatest
But I'm in love with you
Want to stay in love with you
So I'm going to live alone
Yeah I'll be happy on my own

Live the rest of my life
With the vaguest of feeling

Wherever you are
Whoever is there
You know that I'll be here
Wishing I could be there

In NYC when
I get in a taxi
I say "man" to the driver so
He'll think
"Man!
I can imagine
Having a drink with that guy"
"He's alright"

Wherever you are
Whoever is there
You know that I'll be here
Wishing I could be there

One thing: "Catcher in the Rye", Yes?

Holden gets kicked out of his school and decides to go to a trip to New York for a few days.
Talks to taxi drivers and invites one for a drink as he's very lonely.
Goes to bars, is bored talking to stupid girls, often thinks of Jane Gallagher ("Wherever you are, whoever is there, you know that I'll be here wishing I could be there...") - Holden often wants to call Jane but always ends up telling himself he "doesn't feel like it" and in the end, doesn't.
If my memory isn't letting me down, Holden likes saying "alright", I think.
And "live the rest of my life with the vaguest of feelings" - I don't know, teenage angst? I really don't know here, but Holden is always "depressed" by everything.

Anyway, that could be a source of inspiration...

General Commenthe's basically saying he thinks he's above the the taxi driver, and calls him "man" so the driver thinks that he's a regular joe, when he's not

General Commentbtw, Alex said in an interview that the bridge is about how Bob (the bassist) likes to use the phrase "man" when he's in America/New York, because it makes him sound American.

It may not be relevant to the song, but it's certainly a funny touch.

General CommentI love this song. My favourite from their 3rd album.
Glad to be the first to comment.

In my opinion, this song is about someone who had a broken relationship with the love of his/her life.

Being stuck in the middle of wanting to live alone because their love is always ruined by the bickering,
and wishing to be there for him/her again because this someone is still in love.

wherever you are, whoever is there, you know that I'll be here wishing I could be there...

    General CommentX2.

live alone is my favorite song from "tonight". i don't quite get the new york city taxi driver part. i know it's stupid but the first thing i thought was oh c'mon man, losing the love of your life doesn't mean you have to turn gay.. but, if he's alright he's alright i guess, lol.

General Commentdid anyone catch how it's first "live the rest of my life, with the vaguest of feeling" and then "live the rest of a life, in the vaguest of feeling"? what do you think that means??

General CommentI thought.. being away from her means the relationship can't fail because they can't argue, he can just go on missing her.

My InterpretationTo me, this song about someone who's an introvert that has social anxiety. However, they're in love with an extrovert, but they can't bring them self to break their habit.

Song MeaningI think that the song is about someone who is in love with someone he barely knows, but would rather stay in love with them from afar rather than being in a relationship with them because the relationship would naturally eventually fall apart. The singer loves the idea of the person and would rather live with the "vaguest of feeling". As he says "I'm not saying that our love is the greatest". Some people can love each other even after getting to know each other better. The singer does not know the person as deeply as these types of people and is afraid that if he does, it will ruin the feeling that he has. The singer seems to like the idea of being love more than the actual person. They would rather be "here wishing I could be there" than actually being there with the person. Basically, the singer would rather be wishing he could be with someone he barely knows than heartbroken after getting to know the person. I think the taxi part is about trying to make himself seem more personable than he really is, since it is reflected in the rest of the song that he is not as personable as others.
