Remember all you’ve forgotten
I can’t put those thoughts away
Everything I’ve thought‘s in my head to stay
Now what do we get for trying to follow to a tee
All the instructions you gave me
Did you ever notice
That it’s for you that I’ve lived my life
Every time I had fun you were on my mind
I’ve lost my perspective
I’ve gone off the wall
Really not sure if I’m needed here at all
Hey
This is my last shot
I’ll always be less than my other selves
So I feel like I’m competing with someone else
Who I could never beat in a million years
I was made to think that we would wind up round here
Will we ever get together in a song
Will you ever tell everybody bout right and wrong
Will you let everyone in on the meaning of life and death
Do you need me or are you waiting for my last breath

My InterpretationI think this is a dialogue between one (Light) and ones ego (Dark).

First bit, taking advice from your ego as to what to do, where does it get (us)?

Second, the ego is selfish and needs to be fulfilled, it creates highs or happiness.

Third, the ego is responsible for lows and negative emotions too, to contrast with highs. Perpetuating the cycle to seek highs. It's common to believe that fate is responsible, drawing attention away from the ego itself.

Will we ever get together in a song - will the ego and being be able to co-exist, without the being being suffocated by the ego
Will you ever tell everybody bout right and wrong - the ego is always right, whether you realise it or not. Even when you think it's wrong, your ego is doing the thinking :)
Will you ever let anyone one on in the meaning of life and death - as alluded to in other tracks - dying before you die is to be born
Do you need me or are you waiting for my last breath - your ego dies when you're at deaths door, your being finally shines though. Do you need me ego? or are you waiting till I have no time left?

General CommentAnother amazing song by Mr. Frusciante. The lines...

    Did you ever notice
That it's for you that I've lived my life
Every time I had fun you were on my mind

...get me on the verge of tears every time I hear them.

General CommentAfter I got the album, this was the first song (besides Unreachable, because I had already downloaded that one from the internet) that I chose to listen to over of the rest, based on the beginning. The choir singing, is stunning and I really jammed out to it the first time I heard it.

As far as the meaning behind the lyrics go, I interpreted this one as a love letter, type song. It almost seems like a love letter, to an ex-lover, like he wants her back.

Because, for one, throughout the lyrical part of this song, he says "you" quite a few times, as if to be speaking to a lover.

And then, "Did you ever notice, That it's for you that I've lived my life, Every time I had fun you were on my mind." I thought that part was pretty obvious.

And when he goes on to say "I've lost my perspective, I've gone off the wall. Really not really sure if I'm needed here at all." and I understood this to mean, that he's lost it now that she's gone...and he doesn't feel needed anymore.

And then he proceeds to say; "I was made to think that we would wind up round here." Meaning, maybe that he had a bad feeling about the relationship from the beginning despite his love for her?

And I thought that the last section was easily self explanitory..

So anyway, that's one way I interpreted this one. However, at the same time I disagree with myself because a love song seems somewhat out of place in this record. (In contrast with the rest of the songs) But hey, who knows..

General CommentI think it could be him talking to god.

    Will we ever get together
(meanest soul, meanest soul, meansest soul)

    Will you ever tell anyone
(Of right and wrong, right and wrong)

Will you let everyone in on
(The meaning of life and death)

Do you need me my orator
    (You're my best friend)

It seems like he is asking questions only god knows and if god is going to tell all the humans the answers. Just my interpretation of that part. This whole album is amazing! So psychedelic!

General CommentThis is not a love song .. this song speaks to the questioning of god that everyone experiences.. it shows a struggle between man and god.

Song MeaningThe Empyrean is a concept album, meaning it tells one story through all the songs, Frusciante described it as being a story taking place within a persons mind, the only other character being someone who does not live in a physical world, but is inside it, in the sense that he exists in peoples minds. That person could be interpreted as God.

My InterpretationI think it could be a talk between the Dark and Light.
Maybe the first and third stanza the Dark is speaking, and the second is by Light.
It could be also about John himself, or the Good and Evil.

My InterpretationI think that just going by the lyrics isn't enough to interpret the song. If you listen to the music behind you'll notice that its split into three parts, only the first two lyriced. I interpret the song as the process of falling in love.

The first bit is kind of the bit up to "Will we ever get together? (in a song)". The first bit is like 'Do I like the other person?'. He says "I can't put hose thoughts away", "Every time I had fun you were on my mind" is him reassuring himself that he loves the other person. He ends it "I was made to think that we would wind up round here". You'll notice that there are gloomy piano chords played, and his voice has some weird reverby panning stuff on it. The piano seems dragged out, I interpret this as him being mentally exhausted by the process of thinking about it: he's unsure about his feelings. The reverby thing makes it sound like the lyrics are his thoughts on the subject that are confusing and overlapping at different rates.

The second bit is confirming his doubts about it, he's being pessimistic about asking the other person out. He asks the questions in falsetto and he gets an answer from the baritone soloist, who I interpret as his voice of pessimism/reason. "Will we ever get together" John is wondering, "In a song" is the answer the voice gives, meaning that he will only be with her when he writes a song about her. The last bit is actually John asking her out "Do you need me, or are you waiting?", the voice again answers but as you can here he goes up at the end, I interpret this as the pessimism being surprised that she's said yes. Through this bit there is a clock ticking, this is showing how the time is running out to ask her out, and when it carries on for a bar before the next bit, its showing the awkward bit right at the start of the relationship, almost waiting for the feelings of elation to come in.

The next part is my favourite, the FIVE MINUTE BASS SOLO. It's really upbeat and I think a lot simpler to interpret: as many people say you cannot interpret love through words, but John argues that music can express what words fail to, and this is a prime example. It's showing how in love he is with her, and how happy he is.
