You were not what I needed
Was not drunk, just defeated
So I stayed
And of course, I don't want you
I just want to hear what you would say

And on my way home
I screamed, "I get it!"
And the sky screamed right back
"So why'd you let it
do you this way?"

Don't write me lines
from your still box
All propped on wheels
Worn by exhaust

Clothes line, clothes line
For hearts who share
with the holes to my heart
Like the linen I wear

And all the popular girls they stare
At the hundred and odd
guns I bear

So what about me?
Me on top of you
All soft in your ear
Time tested radio tunes

So what about me?
Me on top of you
All soft in your ears
Time tested radio tunes

Hey, hey man with the ramblin' machine
Steady in the place of your memory
On and on and on to space
Where they don't duck and roll at the crash of your name

I will grant you a cameo, Baby
With the sound of a stage and the sway of a lady
of a lady

So what about me?
Me on top of you
All soft in your ears
Time tested radio tunes

You are not what I needed
Was not drunk, just defeated
So I stayed
And of course I don't want you
I just want to hear what you would say

And on my way home
I screamed, "I get it!"
And the sky screamed back
"So why'd you let it
do you this way?"

So what about me?
Me on top of you
All soft in your ears
Time tested radio tunes
Time tested radio tunes
Time tested radio tunes

"Was not drawn just to feed it" I think it's actually "was not drunk, just defeated" but I could definitely be wrong.

i think these lyrics are perfectly non specific those lines have meant different things to me depending on what is happening in my life or my head

why would popular girls stare or care at her being 100+ lbs?

it's a song discussing a tough chick. she's a lady, but she still knows how to take care of herself. she gets hung up on a guy, but doesn't let it get to her. she gets caught up in her emotions, but at least she knows that's all it is.

PS. If you listen to her other music, you wouldn't think she'd be opposed to using gun lyrics.

In "Beat (Health, Life and Fire)" she says "And oh my / Gunpowder / In an emergency / I must battle without her she is surely killing me."

In "Hills," she sings "I stole his name off the old army flight suit / He wore in the war / when he thought he was fighting you."

Just 'cause she's little, it doesn't mean she's not tough. Hence what I said the song was about in the first place.

I do think she's saying "all of the popular girls will stare at the hundred and odd pounds I bear" I think she's talking about emotional baggage that makes her different than the happy-go-lucky "popular girls.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

The Night We Met
Lord Huron
This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines: "Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet" So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other: "I had all and then most of you" Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart "Some and now none of you" Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship. This was the perfect song for "13 Reasons Why"

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."

Midnight
Ed Sheeran
“Midnight” is a song about finding a love that is so true that it provides a calming feeling through every storm. Ed Sheeran reflects on his good fortunes in landing someone with such peace and support and speaks of not fearing the dark days because he knows they’ll all end in the safety nets of her arms. “Well, good morning there / What a way to start the day / With everything laid bare,” Ed Sheeran sings in the first verse, enthusiastic to be waking up beside his woman. He apologizes for missing her calls in the second verse and promises to return them because for him, speaking to her is the most important thing. “Well, I get lost inside my head / In this chaos, you’re my calm / And I will find my feet again / ‘Cause еven the worst days of my life will always еnd / At midnight in your arms,” sings Ed Sheeran in the chorus, revelling in his good luck.
