"It's Not Your Birthday Anymore" as written by and Steven Patrick/whyte Morrissey....
Your voice it might say "no"
But the heart has a will of its own
Your voice it might say "no"
But the heart has a heart of its own
It's not your birthday anymore
There's no need to be kind to you
And the will to see you smile and belong has now gone
It's not your birthday anymore
Did you really think we meant
All those syrupy, sentimental things
That we said?

It cannot be given
And so it must be taken
It cannot be given
And so it must be taken

All of the gifts that they gave can't compare in any way
To the love I am now giving to you
Right here, right now on the floor
All of the gifts that they gave can't compare in any way
To the love I am now giving to you
Right here, right now on the floor

It's not your birthday anymore
There's no need to be kind to you
And the will to see you smile and belong has now gone
It's not your birthday anymore
Did you really think we meant
All those syrupy, sentimental things
That we said yesterday?

General CommentWow. This is a really good song. A real highlight. Kinda makes fun of the phoniness of birthdays. People can act all nice and kind towards someone for one day, yet really don't like them and treat them with contempt for the rest of the year. All the good things about birthdays and presents are no replacement for the genuine love of someone (the love that I am now giving to you.....), someone who'll love you for more than one day.

General CommentI love this song, absolutely love it. It's a depressing kind of song, like all the hypocrits you know out there who "love" you but are only being nice to you because its your "special" day.
It's like that 1 person who really knows it and is tired of them all and how theyre treating you, cause in the middle is a real "awww" kinda moment. I love this song...I play it out loud and sing to it..hehe

General CommentYes, well, very true but..

Have you considered an incest/rape interpretation?

It's Morrissey afterall, he always puts subversive meanings in his lyrics.
    Link the following parts together:

there's no need to be kind to you since it's not your birthday
"it cannot be given, so it must be taken" as a prelude to the sex line this line refers to rape/incest.
then he sings about "giving love on the floor, right here, right now" with someone you hate, doesnt sound very beautiful to me.
then he says it again: there's no need to be kind to you (anymore), so i'll continue abusing you.

Mind you that the theme of sex abuse appears a few times on the album.
cfr. Someday goodbye will be farewell: "always be careful when you abuse the one you love"

General CommentThe incest thing never crossed my mind. I think it is about the public opinion shifting of him after the Smiths and the period of the most stardom was over. It's not your birthday anymore, you are not in the center of attention and therefore there's no need to be kind to you.

Which brings Morrissey to the conclusion that the love of a crowd ("the presents") isn't real love and "can't compare in any way to the love I am now giving to you". The whole thing about being on the floor I see as yet another sign of how desperate he is of being loved.

It's really the same theme as in "Now I Am a Was".

General CommentCheers Morrissey, now when I'm late with peoples birthday I can quote you:

    "It's not your birthday anymore
There's no need to be kind to you
And the will to see smile and belong has now gone"

General CommentI'm surprised anyone didn't think this song was about someone being raped the night after their birthday party. I guess the heart has a will of its own :P
