Angel From Montgomery Lyrics
named after my mother
an old man is another
child who's grown old
lightning was desire
this old house it would've burned down
a long time ago
that flies from Montgomery
Make me a poster
of an old rodeo
Just give me one thing
that I can hold on to
to believe in this livin'
is just a hard way to go
I had me a cowboy
it wasn't much to look at
it was a free ramblin' man
There was a long time
no matter how I tried
the years they just rolled by
like a broken down dance
that flies from Montgomery
Make me a poster
of an old rodeo
Just give me one thing
that I can hold on to
to believe in this livin'
is just a hard way to go
I can hear them there buzzin'
And I ain't done nothing since I woke up today
But how the hell can a person
go on to work in the morning
to come home in the evening
and have nothing to say
that flies from Montgomery
Make me a poster
of an old rodeo
Just give me one thing
that I can hold on to
to believe in this livin'
is just a hard way to go

I have to agree with muzeecal.
Every time I hear this song I see mind-pictures of some 'white-trash' woman in a scruffy shack looking back on the train-wreck of her life.
The track just oozes melancholy and regret, which Bonnie captures perfectly in her performance. Wonderful.
@PhilMarsh Calling her “white trash” makes me feel unconnected from her. I’d rather just picture her without the descriptor.

it is instantly recogniseable and her interpretation is second to none To me this song is one of Bonnie Raitts great ' anthems

Bonnie Raitt is THE SINGLE GREATEST INTERPRETER of songs written by someone else. Uncanny ability to infuse a living breathing soul into the words. This song, written by John Prine, is a perfect example. Add to this, her ability to find these songs.
