The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines:

So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other:

I get fed up with every time someone says 'God' in a song and automatically thinks thats what the song is about, and that they are singing to the world about how great God is.

I don't understand how it bothers you that someone else interprets it as a song about God. A song doesn't have to mean ONE thing: it can mean many things to different people. For example, one day I will think it's about my own struggle to find God, and the next I will think it is an inspiration to reach out to my loved ones and "find them" when they are lost and in pain.<br /> <br /> A song that has many different interpretations makes for a fantastic song.
It is easy to see God he is always there I'm sorry it's more like a feel. Just do this pick something that you want (make it small and/or long term) And think about it ask god for it reflect on it think about it continually and i can GUARANTEE that it will come to you ask a question and shortly you will find the answer ( if you automatically think of a question like how to make a time machine then you obviously don't believe and don't want to) this takes faith and being able to be so sure of yourself that there can't be a doubt in your mind, this will help your confidence.

LVH...I think this song is about God, but I don't think it's about how great God is. It's about how frustrated someone can get when God doesn't find them when they really need Him. It's about the challenges in your life making your faith hard to hold on to. Even good Christians think sometimes "Why would God do this to me?" And sometimes it can be hard to keep your Christian faith but if you do, it will pay off. <3
