Didn't you know
I was waiting on you
Waiting on a dream
That'll never come true
Didn't you know
I was waiting on you
My face turned to stone
When I heard the news

When you decide to break the rules
'Cause I just heard some real bad news

People will talk
Like its old news
I played it off and act like I already knew
Let me ask you
How long have you known too
You played it off and act like he's brand new

When you decide to break the rules
'Cause I just heard some real bad news

Real bad news
Real bad news
Real bad news

Oh you just gonna
Keep another no you wont

Oh you just gonna
Keep it like you never knew

Oh you just gonna
Keep another love for you

Oh you just gonna
Keep it like you never knew

While I'm waiting on a dream
That'll never come true

Oh you just gonna
Keep it like you never knew

My face turned to stone
When I heard the news

Whats on the news

    Song Meaning

YOU CAN SKIP MY LINE BY LINE INTERPRETATION BY READING THE FOLLOWING: The question is when DID you decide to break the rules? He's telling the listener that she decided to meet the 'dude' while they were still together. The rule that she broke is seeing another guy while they were still together. He just found out. That's the real bad news.

-------full interpretation--------- first off, I saw the radio interview where kanye said himself that he wrote this from a woman's perspective on a situation that usually happens to women...

I don't believe that one bit... I believe he said that because while he wants people to hear the pain in the song he really doesn't want to spill the beans on what really happened to his relationship...

and here's my interpretation... and keeping in mind that in the same interview he mentioned that only one song on the album wasn't about his exfiance.

this song is about finding out his girl cheated on him.. but finding it out after breakup... and after everybody else knew.

Didn't you know I was waitin on you? Waitin on a dream that'll never come true Didn't you know I was waitin on you? My face turned to stone when I heard the news

perhaps the heaviest line is "my face turned to stone when I heard the news." I doubt he would write something so desperate concerning someone he hadn't had any previous relationship with. I think he's waiting for her to come back. But it's the news that's most damning.

When you decide to break the rules? 'Cause I just heard some real bad news

again, what rules are there between two people who haven't yet dated? he's not waiting on someone he simply has a crush on...

The rules are the rules of the previous relationship. All relationships have rules. Typically, a relationship between a man and a woman has rules involving fidelity and monogamy. He has yet to explain the rules but he's getting to it in the only verse of the song.

People'll talk like it's old news I played it off and act like I already knew

People are talking about his ex's new (but not that new) relationship. Kanye is trying to keep his pride in front of people by claiming he already knew that she was with someone else...but not only did he not know, the fact that, as people say, it's old news tells him that she was with someone else before they broke up... the next line reveals the truth.

Let me ask you, how long have you known dude? You played it off and act like he's brand new

After he got the news from the people, he goes back to her and asks her how long have you known him... she claims it's a brand new guy. In other words, a guy she met after they broke up. But, kanye says she's playing it off because he knows that's not true.

that's the news... it's much deeper than it seems.

When you decide to break the rules? 'Cause I just heard some real bad news Real bad news, real bad news Real bad news

The question is when DID you decide to break the rules? He's telling the listener that she decided while they were still together. The rule that she broke is seeing another guy while they were still together. He just found out. That's the real bad news.

My face would turn to stone, too.

Kanye said that this is his favorite song on the album because it's the best writing he's ever done and he feels that the real meaning of the song is conveyed because of it.

I agree. I haven't seen writing like this in some time.

Nice song. I love the double time feel from the drums over the slow minor harmonies. As to what the song might be about I'm just not sure. Perhaps he found out that some girl he likes has got a boyfriend? That was my initial thought.

Just an awful feeling you get when things don't work out the way you want them too. In this case he was waiting on a girl that he thought was into him. Maybe she did have strong feelings for him but she wasnt ready to be with him and kanye was very willing to wait for her to be. And then he gets news she is with someone else. He plays it off like it doesn't matter and he knew. His friends lie to him and tell him they didn't know about the guy she started to be with. The rules he is referring to are promises of being together. He is upset she is acting like there were no promises of them being together. This song goes beyond his fiance and mother which is what the album is primarily about. Maybe he was talking to this girl while he was with his fiance. But either way its a heartbreaking song as the title suggests.

Definilely a powerful song. As most of you know the purpose of this album or reason for its production was that, at one point, kanye was going through alot. His mothers death and break up with his fiance. as a result this beautiful album was the outcome of it all. This album has been some what therapeutic for me. And of all the song i could probably relate to this one the most.

What i get from this song is pretty clear. Kanye is waiting on the one love of his life the woman of his dreams. He dreams of a future and spending the rest of his life with this woman. Only to realize from outside sources that she has had someone else which ends up to be a surprise to him especially after always thinking all was perfect between them. He acts as if he has known and is not effeced by it to save the embarassment. When clearly he is devestated after finding this out. She on the other hand acts as if nothing as if it was just something that happened without having any control. All along while he's been dreaming and looking forward to spending the rest of his life with this woman she goes behind his back keeping another lover.

When i heard this song it was as if i was hearing the story of me. Right before this album came out i had been with my girlfriend of 3 years and had decided to propose to her during the summer. She replyed with a yes and I thought all was perfect, our relation had always been nothing but beautiful, something that words could just not describe, it was a feeling i had never felt nor thought could ever be felt. We were in the process of moving out and actually attempting to have children. It was like my life was about to begin. My dreams of living my life with a someone who i thought was perfect for me was about to begin, never in my life had i been happier. Only to soon find out from a friend, whos cousins girlfriend worked with her, that she had been with someone else and it had been going on for a while. Of course i acted as if nothing when inside i was devestated, hurt, going insanse, i just couldn't believe it. She used the same excuse saying it was something she had no control over and it was just something that happened. And there went a dream. My dream that will never come true.

Its funny how i can relate to Kanye in other ways then this. When he came out with his song "Through the Wire" i had just recently had my jaw broken after being jumped by a group of guys. Weird??

Wow !! such a strong melody from a hip-hop artist. The lyrics are easy to understand so doe'nt require any understanding , the thing which attracts me the 2 min ending music which is quite emotional and soothng at the same time. i've loved that music so much that i have edited it to use it as my ring tone. I think this music have kanye's out-pour of so many emotions at the same time. According to me this is main song which defines the name of album "808s & heartbreak"

    My Interpretation

this is simple. my interpretation is a couple who has been with each other for a while who decides to go on a break. most times when couples decide to "go on a break" its usually a one-sided decision. kanye didnt want this break, but thats how it went down. during the period of the "break" he stayed loyal, waiting on her to figure her shit out so they could get back together. well she got with another guy instead. BAD NEWS! he asks how long she knew dude thinking she possibly could have been seeing this guy BEFORE the break, obviously while they were still together. either way, he was waiting on her, waiting on that dream. she broke the rules and got with another dude. is it cheating to to get with another person on a "break"? tough question, but i say yes.

Not exactly a contribution on my part, but I've been listening to this album alot more recently (no particular reason, probably just in prep for MBDTF) and this song maintains its powerful feel a couple of years later. Sad stuff, sorry to hear about that story thursday99.

I think you need to start off by not only looking at this song, but looking at the album, and at Kanye's past albums to really see the big picture of this song. Kanye rapped a lot about the fame, money, and reaching the top early on. He was determined to reach the ultimate 'American Dream'- to be the best. He loved "the good life" and "flashing lights" and became obsessed with what fame had to offer. He felt that once he got to the top that he would be unstopable and find complete happiness. During his climb he randomly met a girl, who he fell madly in love with, and this got in the way of his master plan. In Love Lockdown he talks about how he loves her but not the way he wants to. He does truly love her but knows where he's going he "doesnt need her", or so he thinks. He sees her as an obstacle in reaching his complete fame and star power. He can't party and live the bachelor life, like a rock star, which his life has become because of his fame if he wants to settle down with "the one". He's confused and doesnt know what to do and the relationship eventually ends. He knows he can't be with her and still keep his lifestyle. He wants to reach the top and have the rock star life but also wants the girl. So in the back of his mind he's waiting until his lifestyle changes (but hes not sure it ever will, given the life he's chose) so he doesnt have to hurt her anymore. But the bad news is that while he was waiting for this change shes moved on and has found someone else. He's been waiting on her, waiting on a dream that will never come true becuase he wants to be good as good to her as she was to him but his lifestyle makes it impossible for him to be that. To make things worse hes finding out that reaching the top isn't making him as happy and complete as he thought.

The Night We Met
Lord Huron
This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines: "Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet" So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other: "I had all and then most of you" Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart "Some and now none of you" Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship. This was the perfect song for "13 Reasons Why"

Dreamwalker
Silent Planet
I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."

I Can't Go To Sleep
Wu-Tang Clan
This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

Punchline
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran sings about missing his former partner and learning important life lessons in the process on “Punchline.” This track tells a story of battling to get rid of emotions for a former lover, whom he now realized might not have loved him the same way. He’s now caught between accepting that fact and learning life lessons from it and going back to beg her for another chance.
